How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

The ISEE, or the Independent School Entrance Examination, is an important factor in the admissions process at competitive elementary, middle, and high schools. The test features three levels, which correspond to the student's grade level. There are four sections on the ISEE, which are verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, and math achievement. If your child is getting ready to take the ISEE, you might want to consider having them work with a private tutor. If that's the case, Varsity Tutors may connect you with a talented ISEE tutor in Madison who may try to help your child set goals and potentially exceed them in a timely manner.

When your child starts working with a tutor, they'll be getting access to an expert on the ISEE. That one-on-one attention is extremely valuable to the test preparation process, and may allow them to get their questions answered quickly, with the right information. Each lesson plan your child's tutor develops for them may be targeted towards their specific needs. Working with a tutor might enable your child to have much more efficient study sessions than if they were just working on their own. In short, working one-on-one with an ISEE tutor in Madison, WI, just makes studying easier. Because of that, it may also become much less of a chore to your child, which is another important benefit of the tutoring process.

Session Summaries by ISEE Tutors

ISEE Tutoring review by Miriam in Madison, WI
In math, we reviewed perimeter and area worksheet, adding/subtracting negative numbers, and proportion word problems (we went over how to set up proportions). In vocabulary, we reviewed ongoing vocabulary words. The student is doing well with memorizing vocab words. He needs to practice associating words he does not know with contexts he may have heard the words. This week's homework is to practice with the flashcards for the new vocabulary, and do a practice essay.

ISEE Tutoring review by Zachary in Madison, WI
The student and I spent most of our time working on the synonym portion of the verbal section. We focused on more difficult words in order to practice strategies. He did very well recognizing word parts and using tone to inform his answer choices. He was also able to eliminate unlikely answer choices. We discussed using part of speech and related words to provide clarity for ambiguous words. We finished by reviewing pre-writing and using imagery on the writing section. He will complete a writing section for our next meeting.

ISEE Tutoring review by Jeremy in Madison, WI
We learned about prime numbers, we learned how to reduce fractions, and we learned about variables and how to isolate them in algebraic expressions. Practice these concepts and practice memorizing your times tables so you don't have to add.

ISEE Tutoring review by Bonnie in Madison, WI
I looked over an essay the student had written. It was really quite good, and I had lots of nice things to say about it. She did need to work on commas and punctuation and work on more specific word choice (avoid vague words like awesome, cool, and nice). She had great organization in her essay, with a very clear introduction and conclusion. We then switched to math. There was a problem she'd been stuck on from the practice book she has, and we went over that one...decimals on a number line. Then, she showed me another problem from her practice book on perimeter/area. We reviewed that. I gave some tips for testing and referred them to additional practice problems I had seen on the test prep site.

ISEE Tutoring review by Marlene in Madison, WI
My student and I covered fractions, decimals, and percentages. We expressed fractions in lowest terms, we converted fractions to decimals and percentages, and we converted decimals to fractions and percents as well. We used math problems to demonstrate these concepts as well as practice examples. She didn't struggle with the concepts; once they were explained and demonstrated, she had no problems. My student was very motivated and willing to learn. She did make progress by the end of the session; she had a better understanding of what a fraction is, and how to convert them. I showed her different strategies to help simplify some of the techniques used.

ISEE Tutoring review by Calcutta in Madison, WI
It was so nice meeting the girls today! They seem really motivated and enthusiastic! Here are some things I'd like the girls to review this week: 1) exponents; 2) mean, median, and mode; 3) formulas for finding areas of geometric shapes; and 4) simple algebraic equations. I'd also like the girls to take an ISEE Math Lower Level Diagnostic Test. They can take any test except number 9 (we took that one together as a group today). We can review any incorrect answers next week. When they finish the tests, please e-mail the results to me. We will also look at some vocabulary words next week for the reading part of the test. If you have any questions, please let me know. I look forward to next week's session!
