How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

The Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE) is a standardized test that is used as part of the admissions process into numerous private schools. The ISEE is broken down into a lower level, a middle level, and an upper level. The lower level is offered to students who are entering into grades five and six. The middle level is given to students who are entering into grades seven and eight. Finally, the upper level is available to students who are entering grades nine through twelve.

The ISEE takes approximately three hours to complete and consists of five different sections. These include verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, reading comprehension, math achievement, and an essay.

ISEE Tutoring review by Nolan in Des Plaines, IL
Both students and I reviewed topics from yesterday in the context of the test. We did problems from a practice test that dealt with writing expressions, interpreting expressions in word problems, using mean, median, mode, and range, working with prime numbers, and working with exponent. The first student and I spent a bit of extra time working with vocab, and the second student and I spent extra time on probability and ratio problems.

ISEE Tutoring review by Jordan in Des Plaines, IL
We continued working on adding and subtracting fractions, which included work on the concept of common denominators. Student #1 is a little further along in his math skills than student #2, but student #2 is doing well working on long division.

ISEE Tutoring review by Hannah in Des Plaines, IL
We covered mathematics principles - including long division, multiplication, and understanding the wording of math test questions (visual representation). We also worked on written prompts and review grammar and spelling principles, as well as the key aspects of persuasive writing. His concentration and general demeanor is excellent, and we were able to make significant headway in this regard.

ISEE Tutoring review by Naama in Des Plaines, IL
Today we made flashcards of the common fraction/decimal/percentage conversions and then went through them, finding that more than half of the test questions in math involve this skill. We then read some practice passages and discussed the different kinds of questions in reading comprehension- main idea, detail, author tone- and how to identify these things in the passage.

ISEE Tutoring review by Zachary in Des Plaines, IL
Today, we focused on each step of operations with fractions. He did an excellent job using each step as we went over them together. After discussing addition, multiplication, and division with fractions, he was able to teach each step back to me. We did some additional review of comparing fractions, writing equivalent fractions, simplifying fractions, and estimating using fractions. We finished by reviewing the question types and strategies for the verbal section. He will complete a practice quantitative and verbal section before our next meeting. Awesome work!

ISEE Tutoring review by Scott in Des Plaines, IL
I first went over a reading section practice test that the student did for homework. He did fairly well on it, and we went over the ones he got wrong. I also went over some decimal worksheets I had given him for homework. He had a little trouble with the multiplication, but it was a simple mistake to fix. We then did some math practice at the end.
