How can a tutor help your child master the ISEE?

The Independent School Entrance Examination (more commonly called the ISEE), is a school admissions exam that some competitive public and private schools use to determine whether a student is academically suited to enter their programs. There are three levels: the lower level, which is for fourth and fifth grade students; the middle level is for sixth and seventh graders; and the upper level is for students in eighth through eleventh grades.

An expert ISEE tutor in Buffalo may give your child the chance to learn concepts slowly and gradually, working to build the knowledge needed for the exam. If you're ready to get serious about test preparation, Varsity Tutors may help you find the right ISEE tutor that matches your child's needs

ISEE Tutoring review by Brandon in Buffalo, NY
The student's very good at math, though he just doesn't know some of the more complicated stuff yet, like ratios, which I can teach him. I'm sure he will pick it up fast. We spent the last few minutes editing the essay he had completed previously.

ISEE Tutoring review by Morgan in Buffalo, NY
The student and I looked through the full-length practice test he took last week. I had graded and scored it prior to today, so I first wanted to go over how the scoring process actually works for the ISEE. I know him well enough by now to know that he can more than handle that semi-complicated information, and believe it is good for him to know how the questions he is answering will translate into a score that will be sent to his prospective school. We then delved into going through each question missed in each section, looking at why the answers are what they are and making certain he understood how to properly complete each of them.

ISEE Tutoring review by Sarah Brooke in Buffalo, NY
Today Student 1 and I went over her reading section. She did very well! She only got four answers wrong, the best she's ever done. I noticed that most of the questions she got wrong asked about words or sentences in context, so we did a practice test on that subject and she got all the questions right. I assigned her a verbal section for next Tuesday. Student 2 and I did a practice test for main idea, and I helped her find the correct answers by looking back at the passage and making sure all parts of the answer are correct. I assigned her another reading passage, as well as a math achievement.

ISEE Tutoring review by Rina in Buffalo, NY
First, the student took the multiplication quiz. I can tell that she has reviewed them because she is much faster than last week. She completed 15/60 problems during the first two minutes, and finished the last 45 within the next 10 minutes. Out of all of them, she missed only 6 questions. Next, we looked at the Verbal Reasoning section of the practice test she took. I introduced how to approach sentence completion problems. I also wrote down a list of the words she was not so familiar with (a list of 13). Next, I introduced fractions. She was rusty at first but was quick to remember what fractions are. Next, I talked about how to find out if two fractions are equivalent. Lastly, I talked about reducing fractions, or finding the equivalent fraction that has the smallest numbers in the numerator and denominator. Lastly, I went over her essays. I noticed that she had a lot of ideas that surely are cohesive around some themes in her mind, but that this cohesion and the relevance of these ideas are often not evident in her paper. I explained about how papers need first and foremost to answer the question asked, and then have organized supporting ideas that support her assertions. I left her with math homework and flash cards for the vocabulary words she didn't know.

ISEE Tutoring review by Jason in Buffalo, NY
It was our math day. We reviewed many concepts we have covered since the beginning. She seems to have fully understood all the new math concepts. We introduced more new items, such as factors and even prime numbers. She seems to be quite receptive to all the new ideas. I want her to develop more confidence in math; I believe she is realizing the fact that she's actually much better at math than she had previously thought she was.

ISEE Tutoring review by Richard in Buffalo, NY
We began by selecting verbal diagnostic tests 7 & 8 from the ISEE-Middle level. The student was deliberate and focused as he read through both diagnostic tests. We spent considerable time reviewing and identifying his challenging areas. In fact, what we discovered was that in both diagnostic exams, he had the most incorrect answers in the sections on synonyms. As a result, I assigned him homework: incorporating the corrected synonyms in sentences that he writes to help him expand his vocabulary. We will review that material in our next session. After our first two sessions, wherein he read the tests out loud, in our next meeting we will go to silent reading. That technique more closely mirrors the actual test experience, and it will help him with the speed at which he completes each question. Additionally, I plan to use an online resource to help him improve his overall comprehension so he can draw more accurate inferences.
