How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

The HSPT, or High School Placement Test, is part of the admissions process for individual parochial and private secondary schools. Your child can take the exam in 8th grade either in the spring or fall. Since the exam is only administered by select schools, it is not a standardized exam. Schools use it to compare students across a single grade-level to choose the top students who meet their expectations. Your child can receive a score between 200 and 800. There are five sections on the exam that are required: language, math, quantitative, reading, and verbal skills. Depending on the school, your child may be required to take additional sections. You don't have to let your child struggle to prepare alone. Contact Varsity Tutors. Our skilled educational directors are happy to try to help you connect with an experienced HSPT tutor in Newton, Massachusetts.

Session Summaries by HSPT Tutors

HSPT Tutoring review by Rachael in Newton, MA
Today, we reviewed vocab and added 5 more words to be learned by the next and final session on Thursday, 12/3. We also discussed some SAT logistics, including the importance of making sure her scores are set up to be sent to the schools she's applying to. We reviewed progress to date on the essay, and she will practice writing example paragraphs in 3-5 minutes in order to make sure she provides at least two examples to illustrate her position. We also discussed the importance of confidence, and how she tends to get the right answer when she answers a question. We continued to work on getting into an "SAT frame of mind" vs. a regular academic frame of mind to maximize her performance. She will set aside time to take one more full-length practice test before Thursday to gauge progress and final areas to focus on in our last session.

I proctored the student through a practice ACT Math test, on which he scored a 19, a slight improvement over his past attempts. We spent the rest of the session going over the mistakes to help improve his understanding.

HSPT Tutoring review by Robert in Newton, MA
The student and I went over the final portion of the SAT math section and did some practice reading and writing to get a feel for her comfort with those sections. I am advising her to take a practice test before our next meeting to get used to both the timing and duration of the real test. In addition it will give us material to cover in our next session.

HSPT Tutoring review by Matthew in Newton, MA
We spent the first hour working on review problems, applying the concepts that we have gone over the past few sessions. And she did very well. From there we went to Science for the first time and talked about testing strategy here. She is incredibly intelligent.

HSPT Tutoring review by Cynthia in Newton, MA
Tonight the student and I pushed it an extra half hour working on her essay writing techniques. We continued a persuasive personal essay, read an academic article, and she began working on a response essay to the article. On Friday, we will continue working on that response essay as well as practice more reading, writing, and editing techniques with a goal of enforcing grammar.
