How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

The High School Placement Test (HSPT) is administered by private and parochial high schools. It is taken by students in eighth grade and plays a role in the admissions process to private and parochial high schools. The test consists of 300 questions and takes two and a half hours to complete.

The HSPT traditionally consists of five different sections. These include reading, verbal skills, math, quantitative skills, and language. The reading section focuses on vocabulary and reading comprehension. The verbal skills section consists of synonyms, analogies, antonyms, logic, and verbal classification. The math section has questions concerning geometry, arithmetic, and algebra. The quantitative section expands upon the math section by adding geometry numbers and geometric and non-geometric comparisons. Finally, the language section places an emphasis on capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and grammar.

HSPT Tutoring review by Theresa in New Haven, CT
The student and I went over his most recent SAT scores and I asked him what he felt like his strong suits and weaknesses were when it comes to the Verbal section of the SAT. We went through some of the vocabulary questions and he answered 4 out of 5 correct. Moving on to the reading comprehension questions he struggled more but it was mainly because he didn't know the words. We worked a lot with context clues, finding hidden meanings and going over vocabulary.

HSPT Tutoring review by Gus in New Haven, CT
During this session, we focused on the two verbal sections, particularly reading comprehension. He is very strong in both sections, but occasionally runs up against a question, so we worked on strategies for answering questions more quickly and for answering questions that seem somewhat ambiguous.

HSPT Tutoring review by Suleman in New Haven, CT
Today's session was much better than yesterday's because there were far fewer distractions and the student's was much more attentive. We spent the first hour drilling vocabulary and doing sentence completion questions. We then discussed test scoring and the grading scale. We moved on to math for the final hour and he was assigned homework for next Saturday at 11AM.

HSPT Tutoring review by Charles in New Haven, CT
Today was my first session with the two students. First, we discussed general test-taking strategies, like how to guess effectively, and which types of questions to skip. Then we zeroed in on the language section of the test, and we looked at the test that they did. I helped them understand specific grammar and style concepts that they had difficulty with, as well as discussing specific strategies that they can use on language questions to help them maximize their efficiency (breaking sentences down into words).
