How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

Students seeking admission to a private or competitive senior high may have to take the High School Placement Test, or HSPT, in order to be considered for a position at the school. The exam is a means by which admissions boards can evaluate individual students on a standardized field. The score is meant to indicate how prepared a student is for success at their school. It tests students on the following subjects: verbal skills, quantitative skills, reading, mathematics, and language. This means that doing well on the HSPT could be a difference-maker in determining whether or not your child gains acceptance into their dream school. Because of this importance, it makes sense to plan for the HSPT as well as possible. If your student is preparing to take the HSPT and is overwhelmed by the amount of content that they will need to study for the exam, then a great plan for extra assistance is having them work with a tutor. You can get help connecting with HSPT tutoring in Irving, TX, by contacting Varsity Tutors.

Your student can work with a knowledgeable tutor who can walk them through the process of HSPT test preparation they need. Working individually with a tutor gives your student the chance to ask any questions they have when they come up and get answers quickly. This can be a big time-saver in comparison to trying to find those answers alone. Your student's tutor can also complete diagnostics for your student in order to find the parts of the HSPT that may cause them the most trouble. Personal Irving HSPT tutoring can be an efficient process because your student gets to focus on the areas that need the most work and doesn't have to waste time re-learning subjects they are already strong in.

Today we did more practice problems. Some of them seemed to be longer than real exam questions, but we focused on the main things that you have to know in order to solve them. She needs to practice some basic things like factoring and we worked on that today.

Today we talked about the test in general and then looked at the student's scores from his previous test and discussed them. We began working on the test's reading section and worked on ways to read more quickly, typical answer types, taking notes, and eliminating answer choices by looking for specific clues and relevance.

HSPT Tutoring review by Michael in Irving, TX
At today's session, we went over vocabulary and math. Both of them struggle a little bit with the vocabulary, but I am seeing some improvement. With regards to the math, I think that student 1 is almost perfect and that student 2 is improving. My hope is that working with him one-on-one tomorrow night will give us an opportunity to really focus on the math.

HSPT Tutoring review by Taylor in Irving, TX
My first session with the student saw us work primarily on grammar, which he identified as his single most pressing issue. We will reserve entirely separate sessions for reading comprehension and the essay. I walked him through the basics of sentence structure -- specifically with regard to phrases and clauses and parallel structure. We also discussed collective nouns and their corresponding pronoun agreements, as well as all manner of punctuation. After a quick-and-dirty review of these concepts, I had him work some online exercises for practice. I then spent a good chunk of time editing one of his papers for his history class, taking note of the various grammatical mistakes, which mostly centered on capitalization and punctuation. I left him with an edited paper, as well as a chart that serves as a rundown of the key grammar concepts we'll be learning.
