Session Summaries by HSPT Tutors

HSPT Tutoring review by Travis in Hoboken, NJ
The student and I worked mostly on word problems involving, distance, rate, time, and variable expressions. One technique that we practiced was making tables using given information in order to develop a system of equations. The student is able to develop the systems of equations accurately, and we practiced different techniques to solve them quickly. We also talked about being careful as to how variables are defined and specifically which variable is required to answer the question. Lastly, we worked on some geometry problems involving areas of composite shapes, and areas of regions that are inside other regions.

HSPT Tutoring review by Courtney in Hoboken, NJ
Worked on sentence completion for the hour. The student worked on a section on her own then we went over applying test taking strategies to each problem. Her biggest problems with these questions were usually a) not knowing the meaning of the words in the answers and b) reading the answer choices first and picking an answer based on recognizing the word (and not making sure it was the correct response). We added some of the words she missed to her vocab flashcards and I gave her some tips to study for the next time we look at these questions.

The student and I finished the remaining section of a practice test we worked on together and discussed good test taking skills for the last time. I also walked him through the process of writing an essay one last time, including how to write a good thesis and introductory/conclusion sentences to his paragraphs. I feel that he is well prepared and wish him all the best on his academic endeavors.

HSPT Tutoring review by Benjamin in Hoboken, NJ
Began by covering grammar questions she had completed prior to the session, broke down how best to dissect sentences and ascertain the grammatical rules at play, how to make the necessary inferences. Moved on to the math section and mainly focused on how she can use abstraction to more easily answer questions rather than using complicated formulas, finding more straightforward ways to tackle questions. Finished with some critical reading review of vocabulary and grammar passage. Instructed her to complete certain sections of practice problems before next session, review vocabulary, write an essay for feedback. Good progress on critical reading, seems to be breaking down passages much better, work more at figuring out rules for math and grammar.

We continued doing practice tests. We did all sections of ISEE and looked at her raw scores, scale score and quartile. She is very bright and is doing well, but her quantitative reasoning is her lowest score, so we will be focusing more and more on that.

HSPT Tutoring review by Walter in Hoboken, NJ
We worked on SAT and ACT critical reading and comparing the kinds of questions and format for each test. The student did significantly better with the ACT, but the amount of time she takes for answering the questions will be an issue here. Even though she felt more comfortable with the ACT (very few or none wrong on the reading section), she will have to look more closely at these two tests before she and her parents make a decision. In any case, she will need to do a lot of practice. The student had worked on vocabulary, and she has a good memory. She still needs to do more reading.
