Session Summaries by HSPT Tutors

HSPT Tutoring review by Lily in Castle Rock, CO
I had sent over some additional verbal practice (we exhausted the problems in her prep book), so we started by going over her answers and reviewing some tips and reminders. Then we moved on to math. We worked on practice problems together and the student showed great improvement from last time. Her task now will be to make sure she's really comfortable with common number patterns and formulas (multiplication tables, squares, geometry, etc.) so she can improve her pacing. To help her do this, I'm sending over some practice worksheets and we will create flash cards together.

HSPT Tutoring review by Aron in Castle Rock, CO
The student has decided to take the ACT in addition to the SAT. I asked him to complete two sample exams prior to the session. He did well. We spent a great deal of time going over the questions that he got wrong. The student is an excellent serious student and his confidence is building. I am sure he will do well.

HSPT Tutoring review by Ishita in Castle Rock, CO
Today we did a lot of vocabulary work. This is still her weakest point, although it is getting better as she continues studying and working on it. The sentence completion portion is going quite well.

HSPT Tutoring review by Julie in Castle Rock, CO
The student and I had our first session. We went over a practice SAT from the book that she did prior to our session. Overall, she is very good at math. She has forgotten some simple geometry formulas, but other than that and a few minor mistakes, her math was excellent. We talked about logical reasoning and scrambled paragraphs strategies and spent about half the session working on reading comp strategies.

We began by going over a practice test the student had completed. Next we focused on probability for a while, which will be part of the ninth grade test. Finally we worked a little on Reading Comprehension.

HSPT Tutoring review by Toniann in Castle Rock, CO
Today the student and I worked on the English portion of the placement exam. Using the new practice book she had, I timed her as she answered the 54 diagnostic questions. She took 34 minutes, and got 25% of them correct. Her strength is analogies, as she got them all correct; she needs to work on vocabulary, grammar rules, and citing textual evidence. We reviewed the diagnostic, and began a spelling and vocabulary list. We will focus in on practicing various strategies to help her improve next week.
