How can a tutor help your child master the HSPT?

For eighth graders all over America, studying for the High School Placement Test (HSPT) can be daunting. Some students might struggle with writing, and others might struggle with math. How will these students prepare for the exam? Varsity Tutors can help connect eighth graders with a tutor to help them prepare for the HSPT. They know the ins and outs of the exam, so they can show your student how to study effectively for it. Since the test is only administered twice a year, this means that there are only so many chances for your child to take the exam. Time is of the essence when it comes to matching your child with a tutor to help them step up their game in studying for the exam. HSPT tutoring in Atlanta, Georgia, can be specialized for your child's learning style and needs.

The HSPT might be the longest test your child will take up to this point in their academic lives. There are about 300 questions on the exam, and students are given two and a half hours to complete it. There are several versions of the exam administered by private schools. There are several subjects that your student will need to study to do well on the exam. These subjects include language, math, quantitative skills, reading, and verbal skills. There are also extra sections, like science and Catholic religion, that may be added to your child's exam. Atlanta HSPT tutors can help your student study effectively so that they can feel prepared on test day.

HSPT Tutoring review by Danielle in Atlanta, GA
The student took a practice exam this weekend. He felt as though he did very well in the math sections and needs more work on verbal skills and language sections. Will continue to study them. She will take the SAT soon, so we continued working on the math sections.

HSPT Tutoring review by Suzanne in Atlanta, GA
We started the session with flashcards of some key vocabulary words. In order to adjust to his learning style, I picked five flashcards at a time and made sure he had mastered those before we went on to the next five. Then, we worked on the reading comprehension section of a workbook. He did a number of reading comprehension practice sections, reading passages and answering questions about them. I noticed that he often guessed the answers based on what he could remember about the passage instead of referring back to the reading to look for the answer. Because of this, when he answered questions wrong, I asked him to look back at the reading and then choose another answer instead of moving on to the next question right away.

HSPT Tutoring review by Carolyn in Atlanta, GA
We went over the questions she missed on the math portion. Once she saw how to work some of the series and comparison problems, she picked them up quickly. We need to focus on number manipulation, division, and working with fractions.

HSPT Tutoring review by Christine in Atlanta, GA
Worked on percentages and some review of fractions. The student did a 30-minute practice section and then went back through to try to fix the questions he got wrong. We'll go over the remaining incorrect answers and the two practice tests he'll do over the next two weeks.

HSPT Tutoring review by Mary in Atlanta, GA
Today, we finished the verbal and quantitative sections in the book we were using, so I'm going to search for some worksheets to bring for the student next time. The student's really great at math. We will probably focus on verbal more during the rest of our sessions. We do need to come up with some strategies for certain math problems, though, since he's not allowed to use a calculator.

HSPT Tutoring review by Doug in Atlanta, GA
Worked through the HSPT, which is Charlie's biggest concern, and talked about his general plan. Looked at Math in particular, and talked about ways to speed up: reviewed concepts like graphs and exponent rules. We've got a lot to do, but he's got a great attitude!
