Place Value

Throughout history, most (but not all!) human cultures have used a decimal number system, based on the number 10 .

In our positional decimal notation, digits have different values depending on where they are placed . Each place value is 10 times the place value to the right, and one-tenth of the place value to the left.

In the ones place is a 7 , with the value 7 × 1 = 7 .

In the tens place is a 2 , with the value 2 × 10 = 20 .

In the hundreds place is a 3 , with the value 3 × 100 = 300 .
