Absolute Value of a Complex Number

The absolute value of a complex number , $a + b i$ (also called the modulus ) is defined as the distance between the origin $(0, 0)$ and the point $(a, b)$ in the complex plane.

$| a + b i | = \sqrt{a^{2} + b^{2}}$

Example:

$\begin{array}{l} | - 2 + 3 i | = \sqrt{{(- 2)}^{2} + 3^{2}} \\ = \sqrt{4 + 9} \\ = \sqrt{13} \end{array}$
