Session Summaries by History Tutors

History Tutoring review by Sharon in Concord, NC
The student requested that we practice multiple-choice questions for today's session, so I posted prefabricated questions from the online platform for her. She did well with most of the questions, but she did struggle with the underlying implications of some events. Once she completed the multiple-choice questions, we clarified the events that were still confusing for her.

Tonight, we went over the reading comprehension activity on tenement housing. The student got all the multiple-choice questions correct and had no difficulty in extracting meaning from the reading. We will move up to the next higher level! We also worked on the thirty facts assignment she has to complete from the chapter on reform movements of the 1800s. We selected and defined ten, and we will go over them on Thursday. She is watching a movie in her history class and is having some difficulty understanding it, as it moves quickly. I was able to find the movie on YouTube, so she can watch it at home and be able to stop and rewind as needed to understand what is happening. I will watch it as well so that I can assist her with an essay she needs to write on Thursday.

We had a very productive hour helping to get the student caught up. She got several portfolios and a test submitted, which raised her grade average across all classes.

History Tutoring review by Erika in Concord, NC
We worked on American history in the period before the Civil War again; this time, we covered the Mexican-American War. We spent most of the session running through the relevant chapters in his textbook, discussing details and themes where appropriate. Some clarifications were made when the wording was confusing. Generally, he remembered the material fairly well from class, but reinforcing it seemed to help, and there were a couple of concepts that benefitted from discussion and clarification.

History Tutoring review by Margaret in Concord, NC
He and I planned to continue working on his instruction in US Government. Last session, we reviewed the structure of the government as dictated by the Constitution. The next topic covered should include: democratic vs. undemocratic aspects of bi-cameral and executive systems; the difference between representative democracy and direct democracy; and the hallmarks of democratic, two-party and multi-party political systems to elect a new (or incumbent) person for president. We will then discuss and relate this information to the election process in the US today.

History Tutoring review by Abby in Concord, NC
This evening, he and I carefully read the packet concerning the presidential candidates he had received from his History teacher. He did not recall receiving the article from the Washington Post he was supposed to read, or the link to the quiz about his own political profile that he should take before completing the other parts of the packet. He is going to ask his teacher for clarification on where he can find this information. We spent some time discussing a number of issues in this year's presidential election including immigration and job creation so that he could choose three that he will write about.
