I've really enjoyed my experience with VT. I was feeling very discouraged about taking the GRE again and I wanted to try and boost my score. I think learning from a person is so much better than a book! I feel so much more prepared and I've been telling people about it as well!

We found VT to be incredibly well qualified and were able to get 2 different people for the type of studying my son needed for his GRE studies. They were able to tailor the teaching structure one on one to his needs. He had excellent results, and has since been accepted to grad school.

GRE Tutoring review by Hallie in Rockville, MD
The student and I reviewed the light-dependent and light-independent reactions of photosynthesis.  We further discussed photosynthesis, ATP, NADPH, various photosynthetic experiments, etc.  We covered the questions in her text at the end of the chapter, both multiple choice questions and questions requiring explanations.  She got almost 100% correct in all work that we did today, including when we reviewed her notes and I quizzed her on some of the vocabulary terms and scientific concepts.

The student and I finished working through her last practice test: the last two passages of the reading section. She did much better on the questions after I explained the passage to her. We hope to have a better understanding of the best reading strategy for her after her next test, which she will complete by Thursday. During the last half of our session, we worked on practice brainstorming for the ACT essay. She seemed to grasp the suggested outline well, but we will likely continue to practice in the future.

The student and I began studying for her Texas Politics midterm.  Today we made it through 2 chapters of make-up reading, covering the U.S. and Texas Constitutions.  We also began some note cards on key terms.  On Saturday, she will review her class and reading notes, as well as the text for the assignments she has read, making more note cards.  Sunday and Monday we will finish reading the make-up assignments and review.

GRE Tutoring review by James in Rockville, MD
We reviewed derivatives and integrals of functions with bases other than e, and inverse trig functions. For the functions with bases other than e, we spent a little time reviewing the relationship between bases and exponents, and then moved on to the actual calculus part: basically divide by ln of the base when integrating, or multiply by ln of the base when differentiating. For inverse trig functions, went over the concept that regular trig functions take in an angle, and spit out a ratio; inverse trig functions take in a ratio, and spit out an angle. Therefore, when taking the derivative of something like cos(arctan(sqrt x)), instead of doing chain rule, you could simplify the expression using triangles. Also reviewed how subtle changes to the integrand can make a big difference the integration process you follow.

GRE Tutoring review by Candace in Rockville, MD
This was our last meeting before the student takes the official GRE. Since his test was in 2 days, we did light practice with word roots. We sorted through his word root cards to remove the ones that he already knew, and therefore didn't need to study anymore. Then, we drilled with the cards that he didn't know as well, prompting him to identify at least 3 words that he did know that had the same root. That way, even if he did not remember the root itself, he could think of the words and try to reason it out. I also resorted his flashcard deck and identified the roots that are most likely to be seen on the exam.
