I've really enjoyed my experience with VT. I was feeling very discouraged about taking the GRE again and I wanted to try and boost my score. I think learning from a person is so much better than a book! I feel so much more prepared and I've been telling people about it as well!

— Elisabeth

We found VT to be incredibly well qualified and were able to get 2 different people for the type of studying my son needed for his GRE studies. They were able to tailor the teaching structure one on one to his needs. He had excellent results, and has since been accepted to grad school.

Session Summaries by GRE Tutors

GRE Tutoring review by Rudy in Orange County, CA
The student has his math assessment exam this Thursday. We spent the session continuing going over the review packet. We covered topics such as area/volume of shapes, dilations, identifying independent/dependent variables in word problems, reading/interpreting graphs, mode/mean/median, probability, and what essentially seemed like logic problems. He did great and I have confidence that he can do well on his exam.

The student and I worked on how calculus is applicable to physics (worked numerous problems on how to find the velocity/acceleration from a position function).  Also, we worked on how to differentiate complicated functions (many containing trigonometric functions).  Sevin's concept of calculus is phenomenal, however, he still tends to think too much without writing down his ideas (leading to minor errors that can easily be prevented). In addition, The student solved physics problems (the concept of friction, incline planes, etc.).  Once he began approaching each physics problem in a slow, methodical, goal-oriented mentality, he finally began grasping some fundamental conceptual topics.  One of these conceptual ideas is that if something is moving at a constant velocity, the acceleration of the moving object is zero.

We worked on Geography tonight. The student has a map test on Australia tomorrow so I helped her study for that. We also spent time figuring out the map tests that she has missed so that she can plan to make them up before the end of the semester, which will improve her overall grade.

GRE Tutoring review by Devin in Orange County, CA
Today I worked with the student on the HSPE exam writing test. We practiced the persuasive prompt of the test. First we read through three separate anchor papers written by students in 2010. Then we talked through the key points made in each of their arguments. We talked through separate rhetorical devices and appeals, such as the double standard, hypocrisy, setting a precedent, personal experience, gaining perspective, etc. Then the student and I began to outline the draft of his own essay. We read through the prompt, developed a stance, and then brainstormed support. Once we finished the outline, he began to write his essay. The essay was on the matter of whether a school board should implement electronic identification tags for students. He argued that the school should not because such an implementation would not solve existing security issues, but would create additional issues instead. He has now created both a sample expository and persuasive essay.

GRE Tutoring review by Erica in Orange County, CA
We went through verbal and math practice tests, and we covered strategies for reading comprehension and geometry problems in the most depth. The student had a positive attitude towards the material reviewed. I included strategies for actively reading comprehension passages as well as strategies for each of the types of math problems we encountered, including cross-multiplying and using the Pythagorean Theorem to find distances on the coordinate plane. I left her with extra practice in her prep books and encouraged her to practice strategies for long reading comprehension passages.
