The student and I continued to go over his assignment from last week, rewriting an essay on GMO foods. He had a new draft to show me, which was a marked improvement from the original. I continued to emphasize the need for a concise, focused essay. I have compiled a "to-read" list, from which he can pick and choose his next reading assignment. From there, we can work on reading comprehension and short writing assignments, focusing on analyzing the text. Although he hasn't had any literary analysis papers yet, this will be good practice for future English classes.

We used most of our session to continue reading A Thousand Splendid Suns; we're now up to chapter 47. The student is enjoying the book and has plenty of insightful responses It. She continues to have some trouble getting them down on paper, in part because she's just unsure that her views are "correct" or may be lacking in depth of insight. Encouragement and positive feedback seem to help. She needs every opportunity to express herself. She has two assignments: a "3-2-1" and an open response question. She is going to start working on the open response in class tomorrow. She worked on her 3-2-1; she completed the questions and observation. She will add quotes for class. She is also going to rewrite her personal response paragraph and email it to me by Wednesday.

Today, we covered the following concepts: phrases versus clauses, dependent versus independent clauses, classifying sentences according to structure, why the words "like" and "as" are not interchangeable in use, the start of her final essay, and "Macbeth" Act I Scenes 1 and 2. The student was highly engaged with all the material presented. I used a mnemonic device for identifying some prepositions. I also left a practice page about identifying sentences according to structure to improve sentence variety in future writings. The student seemed to grasp the Shakespearean language very well.

The student accessed his vocabulary list, and we studied the ten words for parts of speech, definitions, spelling, and sentences. He grew increasingly comfortable with the list as we progressed through the various phases of acquiring "hooks" on which to remember each word. We also discussed the electromagnetic spectrum in preparation for his next physics section of study, and the meanings of infrared and ultraviolet, along with the visualization of both colored light and pigments, as in printing.

Today after reviewing vocabulary exercises, the student and I discussed John Steinbeck's The Pearl, which she had finished reading for today. We focused on themes of power, privilege, greed, and character transformation. She impressed me with her insights about the book. We did some brainstorming, relating the major themes in The Pearl to Animal Farm. Then we read an article about Steinbeck and Orwell's relationship. She began a writing exercise on the topic.
