We worked on the student's study guide for Act II of A Doll's House. First we summarized the plot, characters, setting, and dramatic conflict--he had a pretty good understanding of the play overall, but going back over the scenes after he had already read the play once gave us a great opportunity to practice close reading and work towards a more robust comprehension. As we read and discussed the scenes together, we expanded his short responses to include more specific detail and reflect more insight into the text. We noted key themes and key scenes, which should come in handy when he's eventually asked to write a paper on this play. His big takeaway from today was that he understands what's going on in the play much better when he reads it aloud, which makes a lot of sense given how he learns best through discussion and vocalization.

We had an introduction session. We covered concepts the student needs to review. I reviewed addition and subtraction facts and subtraction of 2-digit numbers. I saw past tests he has taken. I advised his mom to try to review subtraction facts with him and possibly make it a game with his brother.

This week the student has quite a bit of material to cover. For Friday the material that she has due is only her Philosophy 210 homework, but this involved watching two 18-minute videos and then doing 6 homework problems, each of which was a difficult Venn diagram, and then an analysis question about its validity. We also had to go through the list of terms for her Art History midterm, which is next Tuesday, and use her notes from the previous quizzes and my study guide from when I took the class to create a study guide that covers the art pieces/ building's title, the artist/ designer, the country of origin, the year, the art movement, and two facts for each (there are about 45). We got through most of them, so that she could work on making flashcards.

The student was very excited to tell me that she shared the preliminary thesis statement for her research project with her teacher and that he said it was excellent. Tonight, we went over 2 grammar worksheets (38 sentences) that her teacher provided to help her practice learning parts of speech and deconstructing sentences. She did very well with most of the sentences. We practiced the trickier sentences, particularly the sentences posed as questions, a few times. We also explored how and when sentences with multiple prepositional phrases could be rearranged in order to create variation in sentence structure. We have several more pages of grammar to complete over the next few days, but I am pleased to note that she is beginning to understand parts of speech and is able to think through what each word is able to do in a sentence.

The student and I covered a chemistry pretest involving significant figures, scientific notation, percentages, proportions, and general algebra. It was very simple stuff, and I just made sire that she was up to date and knew how to work with scientific notation and metric units as they move into a different part of the class. I helped her write a short paragraph for English on the Dust Bowl. Her English progress right now is going well, but we will work harder on grammar and sentence construction in the near future to prepare her for next year.

We reviewed the student's Language Arts quizzes that his teacher sent home. He was highly motivated to work through these assessments today and it was a pleasure to help him. When he sees the value of a tutoring session he is receptive to it. I think he is a smart kid.
