During today's session, we worked on sight words. The student was able to read all the words previously taught. I added another 3 words for her to study. We reviewed words with the following consonant blends: ch, sh, cl, cr, and th. I then introduced dr words. She read the words, wrote them, and drew pictures of them. We then reviewed words with the silent e. She then read the book I left during our last session. She was able to read it without any difficulty. She then read a new book, which was a little challenging for her. I left it for her to practice reading until our next session. In math, we continued with addition. We are scheduled to meet again next Saturday.

We started off by reading "Dino Pets." We then worked on a short and long vowel review--out of 15 questions, the student got only 2 wrong. We then read a passage and answered 3 questions on the reading, which focused on "ee" pattern words and the long e sound. We finished with a diagnostic quiz of the 12 new sight words we will be focusing on for the next few sessions. He is completing assignments much faster now, which means we get through more during one session. In the coming weeks, we will begin to expand the length of his readings and the length of the writing he must do.

The student and I continued to work on the essay that we had started writing. We practiced editing and continued to write new content. We also continued to read, and practiced sounding out new words. I also introduced him to an online spelling game that he could use to practice. The game focused on identifying misspelled words and correcting them. For the next session I asked him to write another paragraph in the essay, read 5 chapters of our novel, and to play around with the game I had shown him.

While Student A worked on another practice test, Student B and I read a chapter in her history book. She summarized each paragraph as we read. When we finished, Student A and I reviewed her answers to the practice test. For the most part, she's good at narrowing the choices down, and on the ones she got wrong, she had narrowed down the answer selections to 2 choices. She's strategic when she decides which passages to do and which ones to skip. Time is a big factor, but we have discussed strategies, and I'm confident she'll do well on the SSAT next week.

The student and I worked on reading comprehension. He and I read an article in the paper, analyzed it and answered the 5 W's (who, what, when, where, why, and how). He and I also read a short passage and answered questions regarding sequencing and memory of the passage. He and I also worked on practicing his multiplication and division problems as well. Any words he did not understand wrote in his notebook and came back to look them up after we read to not waste time.

The student and I focused on editing her Extended Essay this morning. We did several paragraphs together as line-by-line, and then I watched her do a few on her own to make sure she's on track. I also supervised her while she wrote the abstract. The majority of the work remaining is cutting back. She knows to cut down on the quotes to make sure she is only using the needed words of the author and to summarize where possible. She is also cleaning up the language and making sure the paragraphs flow with the proper referencing to the thesis and literary devices. She will email the paper to me this evening for a final review, focused simply on spelling and punctuation. If anything additional is needed, I will list these items out for her in an email.
