Today we went over some of his homework. The topic his class is covering is Shakespearean words and dates. Part of his assignment was to create two new words (like Shakespeare has done with so many words we use today). We then started an essay on the benefits of owning a pet. We started to outline the negatives of owning a pet. We will finish that on Thursday as well as continue to work on the 'extracurricular essay'.

The student was working on an essay for English class. It was a thematic essay on, "Of Mice and Men." He had already composed a draft which provided most of the ideas he needed; he only need to polish the thesis and reorganize his ideas. We spent the session revising and editing. He ended up with four paragraphs which only needed to be edited for spelling, punctuation, and word choice.

In this session, the student and I focused on a short essay assignment for his English class. The assignment called on the student to define his understanding of "justice" and to support his interpretation using examples from well-known court cases. This assignment gave us the opportunity to work on the steps and process of writing. He had tried to write the essay beforehand, but it was clear that he did not work through the assignment with "pre-writing" exercises. I was able to model for the student how valuable these exercises are. We began by first looking over the assignment instructions and figuring out what the goal of the assignment is. Next, we discussed his ideas on how to answer the question. Once we had a good working definition in mind, we then turned to his reading materials and looked for examples that we could use as supporting evidence. Then we took all of this information and sorted it into an outline for the essay. Once we had an outline, it was so much easier for the student to write the essay, which we did together. I stressed to him how this process allows a writer to work through their ideas and to then organize them in a meaningful way.

The student and I finished up the last two modules from unit 2, the unit about feminism and play scripts and sentence structures. The last module was really easy for the student; it involved editing sentences to make them grammatically correct. We also completed the unit review. The student is going to take the unit exam for unit 2 tomorrow morning in class. We emailed her teacher and got the modules for the next unit unlocked. This unit focuses on writers in The Lost Generation, and influences from WWI, WWII, and The Great Depression.
