Today, we discussed the student's assignment to describe why he wanted to join a particular group at his school. I led him along with a series of targeted questions to expand his initial one sentence response to a full paragraph. This led us to a discussion on essay writing in general, and how to incorporate imagery and personal anecdotes into essays. I think that he is beginning to understand better what I'm looking for when I ask him to explain his answers to a given question in a more complete way. We will continue to work on these critical thinking skills in future sessions, as they are invaluable for high school and college.

We discussed the student's paper due Monday about confidential informants. She had outlined a majority of it, so we just finessed her thesis and talked about the content of the rest of the paper. We agreed that she would write the topic sentences for the remaining paragraphs and then email them to me. After I reviewed them, she would finish the paper and we would discuss it over the phone on Sunday night.

Covered: Edited and helped to restructure the core of a rhetorical analysis. Notes: Don't use "which" to start out sentences. Use the author's name along with the page number to abide by MLA citation standards. Isolate arguments of ethos, logos, and pathos to separate paragraphs, if possible, for a clearer argument.

The student continues to be a pleasure to work with; his memory continues to impress, and he is quite clever in a lot of respects. This session, we focused almost exclusively on a major essay that he has about The Lord of the Flies. The topic was "which character has been the most adaptable" during the course of the book. He selected the hunter, Jack. This exercise gave me a lot of insight into how the student thinks and I think it will allow me to help him make his writing more effective. He was able to pick out a lot of ways in which Jack's appearance and behavior had changed, but he didn't tie this all together for the reader to say how these changes illustrate Jack's adaptability. Like a lot of young writers, he seemed to feel that pointing out these characteristics alone would lead the reader to what he felt was an obvious conclusion. For future assignments, we will have the relatively easy task of getting him to stick with basic structures for essays and making his conclusions explicit. We talked a bit about The Lord of the Flies. I am reading the book along with him, and I am pointing out things like symbolism, allegory and foreshadowing as literary techniques.
