I prepared a timed write for the student for this week's session. Since we have been working really hard on sentence structure, fragments, and run-ons I wanted to see how he would apply what he has learned in a test-like situation. He had thirty minutes to read the prompt, make an outline, and complete his essay. Afterwards, we went over the essay together. I was very impressed with how far he has come in sentence structure. I saw a big improvement from his first essay. We determined that he needs to work a little bit on essay structure and organization. I showed him an outline model that I find very helpful for timed writes.

We started off reviewing a strategy that I told him about during our previous session, which involves listing as a way to collect then sort writing ideas. Then we reviewed distinct main ideas by identifying if some ideas were distinct or repetitive, and then generating new distinct ideas to replace the repetitive ones. Previously, we had talked about structure in an expository essay, and I expanded this by talking about the structure in a paragraph. In his class work, his teacher kept writing "where is your thesis?" We practiced writing topic sentences (theses) for different paragraphs. We also practiced variation in his writing to make the topic sentences interesting, rather than writing "this paragraph will be about," over and over. After reviewing all of this, we focused most of our time on generating details. I told him about the five "golden bricks" (types of details) that most writers use (quote, statistic, anecdote, descriptive segment, and amazing fact). He practiced these by first identifying them in a paragraph, then creating his own for different topics, and then by creating golden bricks to go with the topic sentences he had written earlier. Then he practiced elaborating on those golden bricks by answering the questions we'd talked about previously, such as what it looks like and why it is important? Can you give a specific example? He said that with this structure for a paragraph (topic sentence- golden brick- elaborate) it was much easier to write. After writing, we worked on the other half of his revise/edit test that he'll be taking in a week or two with a grammar and mechanics assessment. We went through a text, answering topical questions. He has a good grasp of grammar and mechanics and was able to identify most of the errors in the passage. He said he rushes and makes mistakes that he shouldn't have, so I told him about my "one step strategy". In this strategy, you just have to prove each answer choice wrong, and the one you can't prove wrong is the correct answer. He caught onto it quickly and was able to answer questions correctly.

Today the student was asked to complete a writing prompt about a book I haven't read, and she chose the book she's reading in her English class at school. I supervised as she thought up her own topic to write on and worked on organizing and communicating her argument. She did pretty well with that, although the new need to concentrate on her own questions and arguments caused her grammar to slip some, so we'll continue working on this. We've also decided on a summer project she'd like to try.

We continued our work on conclusions. I provided the student with a handout with many examples of conclusion strategies and asked her to apply some of that knowledge to one of her writing samples. We worked on her tendency to remain on the surface level when writing and attempted to break through to deeper reflection in order to produce an effective conclusion. This was eventually achieved through consistent questioning on my part to prompt her writing. As previously mentioned, it is my goal to get her to ask herself these questions in the future.

We covered Chapters 3 and 4 of The Great Gatsby and looked at it through literary analysis. The student was receptive to the assistance and conversed with me concerning the topics. We also worked on SAT practice and discussed strategies for questions. I left him with literary and character analysis questions and an app to help with understanding the themes and symbolism in the book
