English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Eric in Brentwood, CA
We worked on choosing and developing a topic for a research paper for his English class. We also spent a lot of time reviewing the Cold War and post WWII Soviet and US relations for his Social Studies class. He had all of his homework done and didn't have any other schoolwork to work on. His attitude and performance continues to improve and his outlook on school seems to be a lot better. I think this whole session would count as a "win". For homework I assigned him to review more Social Studies material and keep up with his homework.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Christian in Brentwood, CA
The student and I went through his successes over the past two weeks to understand themes in his growth as a writer and how he's doing in his English classes this semester. We spent the majority of our time looking at two of his most recent assignments and outlining how he could improve his writing by drafting work, writing more specific sentences and rephrasing for clarity. The end of our time was spent reviewing his study sheet for the following day's test on the first six chapters of To Kill a Mockingbird. He will continue to have assignments due each Thursday for TKaMB, so we will aim toward more textual and character analysis, as well as close reading and writing techniques.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Emma in Brentwood, CA
During our first session, I started by going over a student survey. I asked the student questions about herself, her interests, and her goals. The student had a positive attitude throughout and was pleasant and friendly. She let me read an essay about her adoption. Her writing has a strong voice and good attention to details. I hope to work with her on syntax and conventions as we go forward. Next, we worked through a 10th grade ELA sample final. She read passages, answered multiple choice questions, and one short response question. We used the RACE strategy (re-state the questions, answer all parts of the question, cite evidence from the text, and explain). To conclude, we started making notes about key facts from all the books she has read in ELA this year. I suggested finishing the notes and starting flashcards for her literary terms, like tragic hero and limerick.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by John in Brentwood, CA
Covered: Discussed his English topics and he felt comfortable. We studied instead for his geometry exam: topics included finding surface areas and volumes of spheres, cones, and pyramids. Attitude: Excellent. The student is easy to work with; his mind is open and he's an easygoing kid. It makes him a receptive learner.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Richelle in Brentwood, CA
The client is a junior in high school and a very hard worker. She is currently reading A Tale of Two Cities, and even though she's very bright she's struggling in her understanding of the material - as many students reading this novel do. She had a quiz coming up for which she wanted to prepare. We made sure she was up to date on her reading, then we used sources to understand summaries of the plot and major characters, as well as the themes and motifs and symbols. We discussed the book within a historical context and made sure she had good notes to use as a study guide for her test.

English Grammar and Syntax Tutoring review by Andrea in Brentwood, CA
Today we recapped argument synthesis and basic essay structure. The student analyzed "Death of a Salesman" for his classwork and explained diegetic and non-diegetic sound within the play. The student's attitude was eager and responsive. The study skills reviewed included making skeletal outlines for essays and literary analysis. The student will send an argument synthesis essay to me for evaluation. The student has a basic understanding of theme, and I encouraged him to unpack his answers and explain what he means. The student has a great understanding of characters as symbols and understands when a sound is within and outside of a scene.
