Today was our first session, and I think it was a pretty fun one. We used the time to study strategies for solving comparison-type questions, taking several breaks to review important math concepts skills such as graphing linear functions, adding and subtracting fractions, and multiplying polynomials. I emphasized that while these sorts of skills are essential, they are ultimately secondary to logical thinking and that questions should be viewed more like math puzzles than as math problems per se.

This was our first meeting and we started by creating a preliminary list of math topics that the student would like to review with me for the GRE. We started with exponents because the most recent practice section he did has several of those that he didn't know how to do. We reviewed multiplication and division rules and then he went through practice examples of each rule. Next meeting we will review the concepts that we covered and then move on to square roots. He is also going to be continuing to work on practice sections and marking the questions he gets wrong so we can review them.

Today, we focused on PAT, particularly the keyhole sections. I first did a quick review on hole punching and pattern folding and showed the student more techniques to refine his test-taking approach. Then, I showed him to how to approach the keyhole questions, especially when time isn't on his side. Lastly, I helped answer his general chemistry questions and gave him a good idea on what to focus on since his exam is coming up.

We covered a wide variety of physical science passages today which included optics, electrostatics, fluids, radioactive decay, and waves. Overall, the student had a bit of trouble in some of the topics that we covered today, optics, radioactive decay and electrostatics in particular. I instructed him to please review these topics as it is clear that he still has content deficiencies which need to be address with as soon as possible. We will continue to complete PS passages as usual.

Graduate Test Prep Tutoring review by Carl in Woodbury, MN
The student's books have finally arrived, and she's begun working through the prep material for Logic Games, getting up to about chapter 3. Accordingly, we moved on today to Logical Reasoning, using the two LR sections from her most recent practice exam to go over the basics of question classification and to work through about fifteen questions overall. This also allowed us to discuss the common argument patterns and a few common tricks that show up in answer choices (particularly phrasing). She's going to take a test this week and blind review it.
