Session Summaries by Graduate Test Prep Tutors

Graduate Test Prep Tutoring review by Jonathan in Centennial, CO
The student and I jumped right into the tail end of geometry, covering quadrilaterals, three-dimensional objects, and coordinate geometry. We then moved onto sentence correction, covering the general strategy and subject-verb. We also covered diction. I assigned SC #1 and asked her to complete the assignments from last session.

The student took a practice test over the weekend and scored a 600; her target score is high 600s or better. She got 76% on the Verbal. Of the 4 CR questions she missed, 3 were weaken and 1 was boldface, so we spent today's session reviewing weaken CR since we hadn't reviewed that yet. We discussed effective use of scratch paper for CR, and she did phenomenally well. Near the end of the session, I was mixing up question formats (strengthen, assumption, and weaken) and difficulty levels, and she was answering everything correctly.

Topics covered for today included percentages, quadratics (and factoring), inequalities, absolute value, even v. odd exponents (please try some examples on your own to fully internalize this one), and recognizing the number of terms in a sequence (whether they are inclusive or exclusive). I'll send you some Verbal q's later today.

Graduate Test Prep Tutoring review by Carl in Centennial, CO
The student took a diagnostic this week, and we were able to use it to discuss a variety of issues. He'd reviewed a lot of the test on his own, so we only had to discuss the most pressing problems. We split our time about 75/25 between Sentence Correction and Quantitative. In several of the trickier sentence corrections questions he faced, the key to success was admitting when individual differences don't actually matter grammatically (because of vs. due to, for example), and saving his effort for the parts of the question that actually do provide grammatical paths to the answer choices. He's going to do some practice work and compile a list of topics for us to talk about this weekend.

Graduate Test Prep Tutoring review by Jonathan in Centennial, CO
The student is just beginning to study for the GMAT. We talked about where he was having problems and walked through some practice problems in the GMAT review book. We stopped at question 13. He decided we would do sessions as he needs them, and he would proceed with self directed study when not needing extra help. But he did acknowledge that in 5 minutes, I was able to explain something he spent hours on, so I hope to have the chance to work with him in this way moving forward.

Graduate Test Prep Tutoring review by Di in Centennial, CO
We covered exponents and square roots in depth. We began by covering fractions and simple word problems related to % increase/decrease. The student seemed to have a good understanding of exponent rules, and was getting a lot of questions correct later on in the session.
