Session Summaries by Graduate Test Prep Tutors

Graduate Test Prep Tutoring review by Jonathan in Castle Rock, CO
The student and I had a long session today. We went over a few data sufficiency and problem solving questions from his homework. We then compared notes on one of his reading comprehension homework passages. He felt that the RC strategy was working well for him, and he is going to do the next four passages for homework. We went over the more specific RC strategies as well. We then turned to sentence correction, discussing general strategy and starting the subject-verb agreement issue. Next session, we will continue with SC. I assigned SC 1 for homework.

We worked on a variety of quant problems today, some involving straight algebra (quadratic and linear equations) and others involving probability (dice), rate (lumberjacks), and ratios (tobacco acres). I was very pleased by the student's underlying knowledge of these subjects, and I think we'll be getting to the medium-strength problems as early as next week. Also, we worked on pronoun drills in Sentence Corrections.

Today the student and I continued working quantitative questions in order to seek out and diagnose areas where she's weaker in math and address those issues. These questions allowed us to discuss such issues as the properties of parallel lines, remainders, inequalities and their inverses, and exponents with fractions. She's going to take a practice exam tomorrow morning that we'll go over on Wednesday.

The student and I started with a problem set for critical reading, identifying premises, conclusions and background. We then did the first 7 problems from the GMAT guide verbal CR problems. Next, we took a brief look at data sufficiency problems, where I introduced the 12TEN/AD,BCE method of eliminating answers, and reminded him that he can stop solving the problem once he knows that it is solvable. Finally, we read one RC passage (GDP) from the GMAT verbal guide, and answered the corresponding questions, covering some common wrong answer types.

We worked on DS questions today. We started off a bit rough, but he warmed up to them as we practiced a bit. He seemed to have a harder time with more conceptual/ word problem type questions than the hard math questions. He's going to practice those as homework.

Graduate Test Prep Tutoring review by David in Castle Rock, CO
The student and I worked on a sample problem set. We calculated compound markups and solved systems of equations. We employed elementary geometry theorems to algebraic equations, and added, subtracted, multiplied, and divided fractions and decimals. We also evaluated lists of bullet points for sample analytical writing topics.
