Session Summaries by Essay Editing Tutors

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Susan in Lenexa, KS
We started the sessions with a game of concentration for long and short "a" words. The student seems to be understanding the concept. I read an article to him about volcanoes using a strategy where he numbers the paragraphs and highlights words that he doesn't understand. Today, I asked him to use the strategy himself. We then had a discussion about volcanoes. The student is really interested in how things work. I suggested that he bring his science textbook with him on Monday and I would show him how to read a textbook. We could use some of our time together reading the textbook. The last 10 minutes were spent reading the chapter book I got him and summarizing the action.

We went over ch. 17 of To Kill A Mockingbird. The student found the previous chapter challenging, so I spent some time explaining what was going on down in the jail and why Atticus would feel the need to defend Tom. As we went over the chapter I used his classwork to help him keep track of the characters and to see the context of his homework question about Bob Ewell's testimony and Heck Tate's statements led to Atticus asking Bob to write his name and why that might be important later on.

The student re-did a writing assignment I had given him during our session. He wrote about skateboarding and a second assignment about the movie "The Purge," both using the literary elements he has been assigned. I think he has a better understanding of the literary elements now, not only the definitions but their practical use. We then began to read a book his parents selected for him. I explained the concept of being an active reader and taking notes. I told him he needs to write down any thoughts and observations, and also any vocabulary words he is unsure of (he will need to look up the definitions to these words). I assigned him to complete Chapter 2 for next session, and take notes.

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Tara in Lenexa, KS
This was probably my best session yet with the student. Up until now, he has been very apprehensive about studying English and writing, but during this lesson, the student began to have a more open, and more positive attitude about these subjects. I came up with a lesson plan that I hoped would spark an interest in English in the student. I asked the student to read a science fiction short story before our lesson, which he did and even came in saying how much he liked the story. The story, a classic by Ray Bradbury, lends itself well to discussing the mechanics of literary analysis, as well as presenting material ripe for crafting intriguing persuasive arguments. We first looked at Bradbury's style, identifying his use of different literary techniques and then I discussed how these techniques helped Bradbury convey a specific message. This was a real eye-opener for the student; I think he is now starting to understand why his English teacher assigns them to do similar tasks with the texts they are reading. We then came up with a debate question concerning the nature of history and fate, and using the characters as the lobbyists, we came up with two arguments. We then turned to the text to find supporting material for these arguments. All in all, this was a highly successful lesson and even the student was surprised when our time was up.

The student and I worked on context clues, reading comprehension, and math. He was able to recall dominant and recessive genes, something he is learning in science. He seems to enjoy science and does well in it. He was able to recall linear and nonlinear slopes.

For the first half hour I reviewed an essay the student had written with my help. We reviewed the grading format and comments made. He said his paper got one of the better grades on the project. Following this discussion, we spent 15 minutes reviewing ACT V of Romeo and Juliet. For the remainder of the session, I helped him review for a vocabulary test he has on Thursday. We went over 20 words, their definitions, synonyms, and antonyms.
