Essay Editing Tutoring review by Katie in Farmington Hills, MI
Today, the student and I began by reviewing the work he did for me at home. He worked further on his summer reading assignments and we worked together to analyze and contextualize the quotes he integrated into his writing. Additionally, I had him look at two pieces of writing he did last school year: a narrative and literary-based essay. He highlighted areas he felt were his strengths and those he felt were his weaknesses. We made bulleted lists of these areas and then compared them to the notes I had previously taken on his writing. We ended the session by thinking about how he can improve these weaknesses. He responded to a series of questions surrounding resources, reflection, and strategies. Next session, we will discuss how he knows he is improving on his weaknesses. He was given a creative writing assignment for homework.

The student and I met for the first time today, and we discussed the proper method of structuring a five-paragraph essay. I left him with an outline for writing the five-paragraph essay, and an outline for writing five- to eight-sentence paragraphs. I also asked him to finish the last book for his summer reading so that we could discuss writing the essay for it together.

The student and I met for the first time since his two week vacation, and we dove back into vocabulary building and improved reading comprehension. We focused today on poetry, which he, though he was leery about it at first, interpreted very well. I am having him review the vocabulary we have looked at over the last few weeks for next time; he will also read more of the book Lone Wolf, his personal choice rather than an assigned book. I am eager to see what his English class will be like when he starts school in a few weeks so we can target his tutoring time more specifically toward that.

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Felicia in Farmington Hills, MI
Tonight I covered sequencing for reading comprehension. I went over the clue words for identifying when to place things in sequential order. I gave the student some practice questions and then asked her to demonstrate her knowledge of this by placing the occurrences in the story in sequential order for me. She got them all correct. We went over the definition of sequential order and what this term exactly meant. She was very clear with the reading concepts tonight. Her attitude was fine toward the material covered. I left her with some reading comprehension stories followed by sequential order questions to follow up on for next week. Tonight's session went very well.

During today's session with this student we worked on sight word flashcards, phonics and word decoding and reading. She is doing a great job with the sight word flashcards and is getting more confident at trying to identify and read the new level of words. She is close to mastering the pre-primer and primer levels of words and we are currently working on the 1st grade level of words. She knows her beginning sounds very well and is able to identify words that start with beginning consonants independently. We continued to work on identifying and decoding short and long vowel sounds as well as digraph sounds ch, sh, th, and wh. She did a great job decoding these new sounds. We finished the session with reading more guided reading books at her level and she was able to practice the new sight words we are learning as well as sounding out new words with short and long vowels. Her confidence is growing and she enjoys reading the books during our tutoring sessions!
