The student did well today. We completed some sight word worksheets and went over some schoolwork. He seems to have trouble with counting, so we will spend more time on that next session.

After speaking with the student's parents last week about his progress, I wanted to focus increasing on his confidence level while reading and practicing vocabulary words. I printed a few short stories with follow-up questions and key vocabulary for him to learn. For each story, I asked him to read it aloud as loudly as he could. We discussed each story in the context of his life and went over the underlined words' meanings. I asked the student to give me examples of sentences in his life with the key vocab. We then wrote each word several times and went over the follow-up questions. He is a visual learner, and asked if we could do arts and crafts at the end of the lesson. I said yes, and instead had him draw pictures to go along with the stories. I also taught the student to draw time on clocks using several worksheets. Since he did well with the reading comprehension worksheets I brought, we will continue with this methodology in the future. Overall, the student's reading has improved: he's enunciating all of the words and has a better grasp of the vocabulary.

We re-read "The Duck Quacks"ù and completed reading response question No. 1, per the student's homework assignment. It asked him to write five sentences to create a new ending to the story. He was familiar with the book and able to understand both the story and the assignment without difficulty. We read the story and then brainstormed about other events that could have happened at the end. We handled the assignment one sentence at a time, and he was able to think of several ideas on his own. His ability to spell and hear sounds is improving. He completed his worksheet, which asked him to find the correct word among similarly sounding words to represent a picture, and the second side was about rhyming words. He was able to find the correct words most of the time. We reviewed his mistakes, and he understood why certain letters made the sounds they did. He had no trouble picking rhyming words when I said them out loud. We finished the session by reading common directions in his math book and going over vocabulary such as "greater" and "less than."

The student and I finished up reading Nate the Great and the Monster Mess, a chapter book which we had been working on. He told me that he had recently been at the library and found the Nate the Great series, then checked out the book we had been reading, along with a new one. He showed me how much he had read on his own . It was thrilling to see him excited about reading and taking an active role in finding new material to read. His reading is so improved. Now we are working on reading with an eye on punctuation.

The student and I covered a lot of ground today! She is very perceptive and once she understands the context of a given literary theme or message, she can speak to how the author conveys that using a myriad of devices. We should try to meet again so that we can review the main concepts learned so far and discover more of the specifics that the scorers will look for in her essays. I have prepared a review for her to go over the night before the test.

Today, the student worked on his summary and cover for his 10,000-word story for English class. We made some revisions to the first ten pages with one of the characters. His homework is to write at least 500 words a night, every night, until the assignment is due.
