Both student 1 and student 2 continued through the practice guide with descriptive writing by completing prompts which had them to describe details about the kitchen in their home. Once the prompts were answered, they had to use their information to write a description of the kitchen by deciding which descriptive details fit the paragraph prompts. They will complete this writing activity during the next session. Both students seem to be better at remembering to capitalize the start of each sentence and to put punctuation at the end. They are also better at remembering that "I" should be capitalized, and that they should use a variety of words to start their sentences when writing paragraphs. Student 1 was really good at coming up with descriptive sentences.

This session helped the student develop his writing skills. The student and I developed the essay "Interviewing a Superhero." The student was presented with this topic last week and has been building this essay over the last seven days. I offered suggestions for improving his overall structure of the essay. The student asked questions about specific content points and I supplied suggestions for revision. The student does not have specific homework for this week so the parent requested that the student continue developing this area.

In today's session, the student and I refined the game plan she should follow for completing her paper since its shape is pretty well established by now. We divided her remaining time into three phases. In the first phase, she'll assemble the ingredients she needs. These include news stories from various sources, survey results she'll obtain from people with firsthand knowledge of her topic and event schedules from specific Hillel chapters covering specific periods of time. We discussed the importance of standardizing her survey instrument in order to facilitate quantitative analysis. In addition, we discussed the logistics of contacting potential respondents in order to make it as easy as possible for them to provide her useful information. Phase 1 will proceed until she reaches a predetermined cut-off point, which will keep her from getting bogged down and ensure that she has enough time to produce a finished product. In Phase 2, she will analyze and process the information she's acquired in order to understand its meaning and decide how best to use it. She'll analyze the data about specific events, look for trends and try to draw conclusions from her information. In Phase 3, she will finally write and edit her paper. We developed a synopsis format she can use in presenting/relating campus occurrences. This format includes specific factual elements and transitional phrases she can use when progressing from one sub-topic to the next. I also stressed that writing and editing is an ongoing process and that she should not get discouraged if her early drafts don't exactly match her expectations at the start. Finally, we established a back-up plan in case she doesn't obtain the results she's hoping for with regard to her survey. She'll continue researching events so that she has multiple sources of information upon which she can rely in case the survey proves problematic. Between now and our next session, she will intensify her efforts to complete Phase 1. At the conclusion of today's session, she seemed less apprehensive now that we've broken down the daunting task of completing her paper into more manageable units by following a specific game plan.

We talked over the student's next assignment, which is an oral presentation. We went over some tips on how to combat nerves when public speaking. It was good to talk through some ideas about how to take control of her nerves. We also discussed the subject matter for the presentation and brainstormed some ideas for it. Next week, she will practice her presentation for me and I'll critique it.
