Session Summaries by Essay Editing Tutors

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Brooke in Centennial, CO
The student and I had an excellent session in which we worked primarily on analyzing and writing poetry together. We discussed the stylistic differences between poetry and prose and worked to write a poem that had a unified theme, produced particular sensations and emotions, and included salient symbols. He also reported on his progress in a novel he's reading, and offered some new analyses of "The Giver." We read and revised a couple of his class essays, and discussed the presence of pain in "The Giver" and his class's debate about whether pain was present in the book's fictional community. The student expressed reservations about the lack of concrete "facts" in fiction; we then had a discussion about the literary movement postmodernism and its idea that facts must always be analyzed in historical and social context. We talked about ways that this could be applied in science, as well - his favorite subject. Finally, we discussed his homework assignments over the next week: reading a novel and writing an expository essay about basketball, which we'll work to revise together next week.

We looked over notes from the student's professor on her final paper for the writing class and discussed several places to develop and restructure ideas. The student is going to incorporate changes and I will proof-read her revision tomorrow.

This session we continued to work on the student's essay for her Multicultural Drama class. Last session we created an outline, and this session she started to create full paragraphs based on the outline. We finished the introduction and part of the first paragraph of the body. Her extra practice is to work on making an outline for the remaining chapters of her paper for her Play Analysis class. My main concern at this point is the fact that both papers are due in one week and will require many hours of work to be complete, and my tutoring availability is somewhat limited this week.

Today we focused on creating a bare-bones structure for the student's research paper using his ideas and sources from the previous three sessions. First, we revised the thesis. Then he decided that he wanted to organize his essay by musician (rather than by concept or trend). With this organization in mind, we worked on developing topic sentences for each paragraph that incorporated the most important ideas about each musician and still related back to the thesis. Finally, we went back to the thesis and revised it again to make sure that it was aligned with the topic sentences. The process took up the entire session and required quite a bit of heavy thinking and organizing, which he did a great job of handling. He is going to complete his thesis revision for homework. In tomorrow's session, we will begin fleshing out the body paragraphs by choosing the relevant and most important details from his sources.

Since our last meeting, the student wrote detailed summaries and analyses of two of the episodes of THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN. We went over these pieces together, discussing any errors and revising them. Overall, the student did an excellent job, and there were few errors. We reviewed relative clauses, punctuating sentences with coordinating conjunctions, and adverb placement.

For this session, we focused on test taking strategies. There are about 15 key concepts that the student will need to feel comfortable with in order to do his best on the SAT/ ACT. We started with parallelism. We also worked on subject-verb agreement and ended our session with writing tips. I did print out copies of notes and additional practice for him to review before our next session. We will be looking at a few more skills and continue to practice writing strategies with prompts from SAT or ACT tests.
