Essay Editing Tutoring review by Lalitha in Cedar Park, TX
Today we started our lesson by doing an oral vocabulary test on the words from our assignment last week. At first, the student had some trouble remembering the words, but we discovered that she remembers the words best that she uses in a sentence or for which she finds a synonym. Next, I gave her some time to proofread her final draft of her persuasive paper, and then I proofread it with her. This time, she made fewer errors and did a much better job proofreading. We added a few commas, changed capitalization, added or took a word away in places, clarified things, and fixed tenses, but overall, there is definite improvement and her writing is becoming clearer and more organized. After that, we finished going through the research handout; we discussed bias, citations, quotations, and format. Lastly, I looked over her reading log. For homework, I just gave her a few questions to reflect on, such as what she has learned and what she still wants to learn during our sessions. Overall, her hard work is paying off.

Essay Editing Tutoring review by Toni in Cedar Park, TX
In our first session, the student and I began by working through her latest piece of writing -- an application letter to her graduate program. Even though she's already been accepted into the program, this was a good place to start because of how recently it was written. We started by addressing some of the student's concerns with her writing and some issues that I noticed going through the letter. While the student's got the basics of writing down -- sentence structure, coherent organization, etc. -- she does need some work on strengthening her writing through her word choice, organization, and attention to her rhetorical situation. We began working on this by revising a few paragraphs out of the letter, beginning by strengthening the introduction. The student was quick to pick up where she needed work, though she needed a bit of direction to get started on making those changes. We then started working on brainstorming an idea for an informative essay. I gave the student some pretty broad guidelines -- starting out with roughly 750 words trying to inform a general audience on a topic of her choosing. We brainstormed some ideas for possible topics, mainly relating to current events. The danger with these topics is that she might write too broadly about them for the small amount of space given, so we tried to find topics that were more narrowly focused within those broader issues. For our next session, the student will hopefully have found a topic to write on, as well as some information she can use to produce the essay. She will also work on preparing an outline. From there, we can start assembling the different parts of the essay and writing them out. At this point, the student's main concern seems to be simply getting back into the habit of writing and being able to start out, and I think working on a fairly basic assignment like this will help her to get into that mindset again.

Today the student and I discussed further revisions of his manuscript. He's a great story teller, and the challenge is getting his stories right on the page. We talked about a few sections in particular that needed clarifying and how to do it. I also had him read through certain sentences and see if he could tell me what needed fixing. He's going to revise now, and we'll meet again when it's complete for what is hopefully the final revision process.
