Which grade in?

Mr. D. was able to keep my daughter engaged and interested the entire session. He made her feel confident with reading. She stated that he was the "best teacher in the world". She gave him two thumbs up and a heart. I'm very pleased with my investment towards my child's education using Varsity Tutors.

What year in?

I want to thank VT for connecting me with my English tutor. I'm a 49 yr old that enrolled back in college to complete my degree and I was having the most difficult time meeting the demands of my writing assignments. But fortunately, I was matched with an educator that has made what seemed hopeless in my efforts to write academic papers effectively a piece of cake.

What prompted you to seek tutoring?

I'm very grateful to have found VT. They made the difference between a pass and fail grade for my son. English was one of his most challenging classes and with Varsity Tutors he passed the course. I'm forever grateful.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

English Tutoring review by Sarah in Nashville, TN
Today, our lesson was focused around travel as the student and her family had just returned from vacation. We discussed different modes of transportation and the correct terminology for each one. We completed the lesson by continuing to read "Inside Out."

English Tutoring review by Cassidy in Nashville, TN
We spent the first part of the session reading and talking about early America and the 13 colonies, and also practiced spelling a bunch of vocab words from that lesson. The student did well with reading and answering questions out loud, but had trouble with the written exercises. I think she usually knows the answer but gets ahead of herself when she tries to write the answer. I have been telling her that, and asking her to re-read the question and spell/ sound out words when she's having trouble...sometimes she doesn't actually sound out the word but will guess what it is based on the letters. I'm trying to get her to slow down and start from the basics because I want her to be comfortable. I also reminded her that it's going to take time, especially because we only meet a few times a week (as opposed to kids who are in school all day long). I'm glad that she's still determined to learn.

Yesterday we discussed learning goals, both short- and long-term, and some strategies for continuing to study English. The students all voiced their feelings that they have improved over the last several months and that they are more confident speaking and understanding the language.

English Tutoring review by Kathryn in Nashville, TN
Today we finished chapter 1 in the book, which focused on reading comprehension and business plans. We went over the student's answers to exercises testing his listening comprehension and also engaged in discussions incorporating new expressions on reporting from different sources and being persuasive. He is gaining competency with expressions and is now associating phrases he hears with their larger meaning and context within business and the English language. He is doing great on the exercises and is truly grasping the materials.

English Tutoring review by Leah in Nashville, TN
The student and I continued practicing the present perfect tense. We elaborated upon what we learned last week, reviewing the practice sheets she did for homework. Then we spoke about almost, just, and yet and practiced the question syntax, "Have you ever..." She will work on more present perfect practice sheets for homework that focus on writing and comprehension. We will go over these Wednesday. She really seems to have a grasp on the basics of this concept; she just has difficulty using it in context. More practice will solve this issue. Wednesday we will continuing practicing the present progressive and work on increasing her vocabulary.

English Tutoring review by Shayda in Nashville, TN
Today the students were engaged and brought good energy into the classroom. We reviewed the structure of English sentences once again and continued our work with translating from Spanish to English. Students pointed out moments of confusion and asked questions that showed they were making connections to their own use of English. We spent the last portion of class on pronunciation, returning to the short and long sounds of vowels, as well as soft "t," "d," and "l." To tie off the session, we reviewed the bossy "e" and double vowel rules, and students demonstrated a strong understanding of how these patterns work.
