Which grade in?

Mr. D. was able to keep my daughter engaged and interested the entire session. He made her feel confident with reading. She stated that he was the "best teacher in the world". She gave him two thumbs up and a heart. I'm very pleased with my investment towards my child's education using Varsity Tutors.

What year in?

I want to thank VT for connecting me with my English tutor. I'm a 49 yr old that enrolled back in college to complete my degree and I was having the most difficult time meeting the demands of my writing assignments. But fortunately, I was matched with an educator that has made what seemed hopeless in my efforts to write academic papers effectively a piece of cake.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

Session Summaries by English Tutors

English Tutoring review by Barbara in Kendall, FL
During today's session we reviewed last week's spelling and vocabulary words and then continued with the words for this week. The student will study the words that were difficult for her. She then worked on two reading comprehension passages: one with multiple choice questions, and the second had short answers. Last week we started working on a writing prompt, but we didn't have enough time to finish. I asked her to think about the assignment, come up with some ideas, and we would work on it next time. We were able to complete that as well this afternoon.

English Tutoring review by Andrew in Kendall, FL
The student and I spent most of today's session discussing an assignment for her English class, which required her to find and correct errors in newspaper articles. She had already found about 15 out of the 20 she needed, and we spent most of the time finding and discussing the justification and correction for the next 5. We were able to find a few errors of imprecise modifiers and unclear lists, which are subjects she is currently working on in class. We also discussed some grammatical issues which are disputed, like proper verb agreement with the noun "none". She plans to bring these issues up in class to hopefully spark a discussion on these errors and why people disagree about them.

English Tutoring review by Brandy in Kendall, FL
We went through a worksheet on may vs. might and discussed the (very subtle) differences. Then we reviewed the sections that we read in the book on verb tense and went through a difficult worksheet that emphasized editing and finding tense inconsistencies. This proved to be time-consuming and difficult, so I'll be bringing further verb tense practice next time as well as bringing back some of the other work that I had prepared for today, including editing practice and mad-libs. I will also be preparing some work on adverbs. I left the students with a their/they're/there worksheet to do for practice, and we set our next two meeting times.

English Tutoring review by Kimesha in Kendall, FL
We practiced conjunctions, gerunds, infinitives, and past/present tense using her homework assignments. She recently received a 38/50 on a English test. She is struggling with writing sentences and the use of past and present tense. Now that I know where she is struggling, future sessions will be more problem focused.

English Tutoring review by Carrala in Kendall, FL
Today was a very good class. We worked on a book report. I helped the student to write a time line for the two books which she read. In the process we talked about literature and history. We also looked at grammar, especially verb tenses.
