What year in?

I want to thank VT for connecting me with my English tutor. I'm a 49 yr old that enrolled back in college to complete my degree and I was having the most difficult time meeting the demands of my writing assignments. But fortunately, I was matched with an educator that has made what seemed hopeless in my efforts to write academic papers effectively a piece of cake.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

English Tutoring review by Karen in Grand Prairie, TX
The student and I studied her essay for today, and it was quite good. We talked about strategies for concluding. We spent a good deal of time on restructuring and rewriting paragraphs and focused on effective topic sentences. The student expressed satisfaction with what she did. She successfully performed on a long spelling challenge and earned a 92. We then began work on quick logical challenges and I sent her home with more, and an assignment to develop an essay from one of them. We are meeting on Friday to see what she has done. She is to write two essays before Friday.

English Tutoring review by Julia in Grand Prairie, TX
The student finished reading To Kill a Mockingbird, so we briefly discussed the novel. That was followed up by a close reading of Julius Caesar and a review of the grammar chapters she was assigned to read. The student then completed a two-passage reading comprehension set while I corrected the sentence completion questions she received as homework. She had a difficult time with the reading comprehension, and we reviewed the reading in depth. For homework due Sunday, she is assigned chapters 12-16 of the grammar book and she is to rewrite a paragraph from last week's journal entries. By Tuesday, she should have completed an essay using evidence from TKaM to answer a prompt.

English Tutoring review by Kelley in Grand Prairie, TX
Today, we worked on an outline for the "Wife of Bath's Tale" from The Canterbury Tales. We discussed author's background and history, as well as his other major works. The student picked out the main characters from the poem, found excellent quotes to describe each character. We discussed the difference between flat/round and dynamic/static characterization. The student understood the concepts well and applied the knowledge to the main characters. The student's strengths include finding key quotes, choosing main characters, and understanding the text. She left with the assignment to finish reading the tale and "The Pardoner's Tale" and to finish the outlines for both.

English Tutoring review by Lorna in Grand Prairie, TX
Today with the student we worked on her English assignment due on Thursday, which is the first body paragraph of her first formal essay. We decided to also write the second body paragraph and outline more of the others. Her English class is going well, but I went through her Psychology syllabus. We did decide that I will need to meet with her after her last class on Tuesdays so I can help her complete that material.
