Mr. D. was able to keep my daughter engaged and interested the entire session. He made her feel confident with reading. She stated that he was the "best teacher in the world". She gave him two thumbs up and a heart. I'm very pleased with my investment towards my child's education using Varsity Tutors.

What year in?

I want to thank VT for connecting me with my English tutor. I'm a 49 yr old that enrolled back in college to complete my degree and I was having the most difficult time meeting the demands of my writing assignments. But fortunately, I was matched with an educator that has made what seemed hopeless in my efforts to write academic papers effectively a piece of cake.

I'm very grateful to have found VT. They made the difference between a pass and fail grade for my son. English was one of his most challenging classes and with Varsity Tutors he passed the course. I'm forever grateful.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

Session Summaries by English Tutors

English Tutoring review by Nikita in Elk Grove, CA
In this session, the student wrapped up her U.S. History Part A lessons and continued working on her British Literature modules. She does well with modern history, as she is familiar with current American and world politics. British Literature is her most difficult class. We continued working on Macbeth and applying concepts such as theme, purpose, exposition, etc., to Shakespearean plays.

The student had to complete a packet of Spring Break work so we read a couple of passages and wrote an essay as well as a short answer. The student needs to write more slowly, give himself time to plan the essay and to not be afraid of creating complex ideas to reflect common sense.

We began to review for the open response question on the AP exam. First, the student put together a list of all the possible texts he might want to write about. Then, we began to review Huck Finn, working through character descriptions, themes, and formal features and coming up with specific examples that could be described in an essay. We then brainstormed responses to two open questions using Huck Finn.

English Tutoring review by Jordan in Elk Grove, CA
We did had a very productive lesson. Using one of her books, "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets," we were able to review the following concepts throughout the course of our session, as she read out loud and we discussed the overall flow of the story: 1. Isolating the prefix, suffix, and root of unfamiliar words. 2. Recognizing and understanding the use of the "-ity" suffix to create nouns out of adjectives; 3. Recognizing the use of the "-ular" suffix to create adjectives out of nouns (we had a fun discussion about the word "spectacular"!) and 4. Recognizing and understanding the use of "-tion" to create nouns out of verbs. I am encouraged by her attentiveness and responsiveness to instruction. I will be sending Megan several worksheets to go over to practice the concepts we reviewed this week.

English Tutoring review by Julie in Elk Grove, CA
Today the student and I followed up with what I left him to do over the weekend. We reviewed the sight words that he created when we were playing the word-building game. He was able to read most of the words. We also reviewed the 10 sight words that he had been working on for the week. He is able to read most of them. I am still trying to get him to simply say the words rather than sound them out. I downloaded 2 games related to sight words. He was able to recognize the words that were said by the computer. The other game asked him to spell the words. I will continue to look for things on the computer for him to do. I left 10 new sight words for him to work on for the week. We reviewed them and went over all 20 sight words. I bought a book for him to try to read about playing baseball. I read it to him first and left it there for him to practice reading. I told him that when I come back on Wednesday we can read it together. He likes playing the rhyming bingo game so we also played that again. I am going to continue to encourage him to try to just read the words without sounding them out.
