Mr. D. was able to keep my daughter engaged and interested the entire session. He made her feel confident with reading. She stated that he was the "best teacher in the world". What year in?

I want to thank VT for connecting me with my English tutor. I'm a 49 yr old that enrolled back in college to complete my degree and I was having the most difficult time meeting the demands of my writing assignments. But fortunately, I was matched with an educator that has made what seemed hopeless in my efforts to write academic papers effectively a piece of cake.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

Session Summaries by English Tutors

English Tutoring review by Kate in Burbank, CA
The student and I composed her working thesis statement, and used that as a basis for the outline for her in-class topic presentation. We also began work on the rough draft of her paper, laying out the paper by topic in an outline format and then citing where her different sources will work into the outline. Before our next session, she will have spoken to her teacher to make sure the current format of her paper meets the objective viewpoint requirements of the assignment.

English Tutoring review by Scott in Burbank, CA
Since we read Act 1 the previous day, we focused on completing the assessments that accompanied it. Each lesson comprised of vocabulary words from the play and questions about plot. We practiced the vocabulary words using the flashcard application provided in the lesson. When the student felt comfortable enough with both the plot and vocabulary, she attempted the short assessments. For the next session, I plan on reading aloud Act 2 with the student so that she can practice her reading skills.

The student and I worked on her writing assignment, a four paragraph essay comparing the need for education to preserve liberty and Animal Farm. We worked on finding the main points of argument, writing a thesis, and working to find examples for the arguments that were found.

The students had to read nonfiction texts and answer multiple choice questions. They are very bright, and had many questions about the subjects of the passages, as well as many vocabulary questions.

English Tutoring review by Sebastian in Burbank, CA
The student and I went through a practice test. She did very well on the multiple choice. She also did well on the essay section, but it is her weakest section. I think we have to work on organizing the essay beforehand and making sure she had details to use from the text in her essay.

English Tutoring review by Lyndsy in Burbank, CA
The student read and analyzed a debate article from "Time for Kids" about a proposed soda tax. She identified the two sides and discussed what their reasons were. Then, she brainstormed topics for her upcoming argumentative essay. Some topics were: 1. Was the movie better than the book? 2. Should students wear uniforms? 3. Should students be paid for good grades? Next, she and I generated a list of transitions. Lastly, she skimmed two sample argumentative essays and identified transitions and reasons for a claim.
