Which grade in?

Mr. D. was able to keep my daughter engaged and interested the entire session. He made her feel confident with reading. She stated that he was the "best teacher in the world". She gave him two thumbs up and a heart. I'm very pleased with my investment towards my child's education using Varsity Tutors.

What year in?

I want to thank VT for connecting me with my English tutor. I'm a 49 yr old that enrolled back in college to complete my degree and I was having the most difficult time meeting the demands of my writing assignments. But fortunately, I was matched with an educator that has made what seemed hopeless in my efforts to write academic papers effectively a piece of cake.

Do they have an IEP or 504 plan? (We have tutors that specialize in learning differences)

The tutor that was paired with my daughter was perfect and fits Bella's needs. Bella struggles with attention and has been on a 504 plan for years. The tools used, the interaction and flexibility are priceless. I was hesitant at first but now I'd do it again and I recommend Varsity Tutors!!

English Tutoring review by Catherine in Bellevue, NE
The student completed his spelling assignment: he had to write a sentence for the first 10 words on his spelling list. We also went over neat handwriting and I'm currently trying to teach him how to write his name in cursive.

The student has an A in English class at the moment. She demonstrates clear progress in writing, as we analyzed a sample of in class writing which showed a much better grasp of grammar. We went through an in class writing assignment and a few grammar worksheets. I will bring in more 9th grade grammar worksheets for next time. I tasked her to write 1-1.5 pages on a new topic for next time, without any research required.

English Tutoring review by Nobuko in Bellevue, NE
Since the session marked the fourth week, I wanted to make sure that we had reached progress with the student's writing skills. As such, I asked her to write a story about her fish. We spent the entire session brainstorming and editing her story. I discovered that she had made progress in her handwriting. The spacing between her letters was wider and she significantly improved in her "e's" and "f's." I saw that we needed to do more on punctuation and spend more time on what makes a story. For the past several weeks, we discussed spelling mechanics and sentence structure. But we did not discuss the different parts of a story. I will add this into my lesson plans for the future.

English Tutoring review by Adriane in Bellevue, NE
The student and I found another book from the Dumb Bunnies series in the library, which was as silly as the first one we read. We shared reading duties because there were too many words, but her reading vocabulary is definitely increasing. We also continued to write our own book about dumb bunnies and the things they chew. She is motivated to read things that she has a creative role in producing, so I try to make that a regular activity for her. She blitzed through her spelling, and then we started writing a completely new book about Tasmanian wolves. She is doing very well, and her reading is right where it should be.

English Tutoring review by Matthew in Bellevue, NE
We began with US history. I gave a miniature lecture and clarification of terms left ambiguous by the textbook, and then we moved into making a plan for how to prepare for his upcoming mock press conference, where the student will be playing Eugene Debs. More editing of his rewrite ended our session.

English Tutoring review by Kelsey in Bellevue, NE
The student primarily needs help with reading comprehension. This is because he speed reads without fully processing the words he understands or without engaging with or asking questions about the words that are unfamiliar to him. While working with him, I asked him to slow down and we took frequent comprehension pauses. I asked him questions about what he had read so far, how it made him feel, and which questions were being raised for him in the process. I encouraged him to take pauses when he reads independently and to retell the story to himself to make sure that he knows what is happenings as he progresses through new books.
