Session Summaries by Elementary Math Tutors

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Dylan in Scottsdale, AZ
In today's session, the student was to review the next topic of chapter 7: systems of inequalities. While these were typically no trouble for him -- he solved and graphed them with ease -- he did have some issues with the final part of this section, which involved setting up systems of inequalities to solve optimization problems. In particular, he had difficulty translating the given word-problem into the proper inequalities to graph and test. After I guided him through one such problem and he found the answer, he tried others and, with significantly less difficulty, was able to solve the problem correctly. With just a little more practice I am confident he will have this technique down.

The student received an A on his last math exam. We worked on finding perimeter and area of different geometric shapes, and then we planned ahead and reviewed volume and surface are of cubes. He showed me a particular problem that caused some difficulty and we reviewed that problem specifically. We then worked on his Vlad the Impaler presentation and I left him a math worksheet to complete during the week.

We did fourth grade math, including multiple choice, word problems, fractions, line plotting, and short answers from a packet provided. The kids are noticeably better, having an easier time with the work and not melting or shutting down as quickly. They like to help each other now, which I love. Their confidence, performance, and enthusiasm has increased 10 fold.

Tonight, we managed to review 3 coordinate geometry homework assignments. The student has a good grasp of the slope, midpoint, and distance formulas, and is able to use them and arrange them to find whichever variable is missing.

Elementary Math Tutoring review by Karra in Scottsdale, AZ
The student finished her homework before I got there so we worked on her spelling and then I gave her math problems to work on. We worked on them and then did some math fact practice. She does well when we are doing rote repetition of multiplication facts, but when doing 4-digit multiplication problems, she seems to second guess herself. She has learned to choose the method which she makes fewer mistakes with. She did really well today. She did mention that she does better when I work with her, but I think some of that is a lack of confidence in her math skills. She get mixed up with the different methods...she wants to find common denominators when multiplying even though it's not necessary and then she forgets to simplify when adding or multiplying. We are working on her order of operations and with more practice, she will become more confident.
