I worked with the student on the next section of her term assignment. She completed a fully developed use case description and a rough draft, hand drawn, of the accompanying SSD. She now needs to use a software tool like Visio to create the formal diagram and insert full text comments to each flow arrow.

We used some of the student's review questions for the exam as a vehicle to expand on topics he needed to refresh on, or occasionally topics that were outside of the material he had been taught. This included going in depth on the features that TCP provides, and contrasting that to the simple delivery mechanisms of UDP. We also talked about windows, buffering, and congestion control. We also talked about collisions, mail access protocols, and ICMP. Lastly, we showed how to identify a traffic flow by looking at its 4-tuple. It helped a lot of things click for him. There is plenty more to cover though!

Today, we spent the beginning time getting the hosting service working with the student's new project files. Today, we spent most of the time on actual programming issues. I gave him suggestions on how I would structure the code for the computer to randomly make selections as well as the human placement. He seemed to be in control towards the end and wanted to work on things on his own. He can email me with questions about structure or with errors, and I will be happy to try to help.

Computer Science Tutoring review by Jason in Indianapolis, IN
The student worked on his assignment, which was to write several functions using recursion. We wrote a function that multiplied two numbers together, a function that found the minimum value in a list of integers, a function that built a nested set of strings, a function that found the number of steps it took to get from point (x,y) to the origin, and a function that reversed the digits in an integer (without turning it into a string). I think that he understands the idea behind recursion, and I think that he is able to look through a recursive function and understand what's happening, but he's struggling to actually write the code to perform the recursion. We will continue to practice this until he has it down.

Computer Science Tutoring review by Jesse in Indianapolis, IN
Today we went over a few of the student's old tests and assignments. We worked through loops by hand and determined the proper output of various code segments. Additionally we covered some discussion of data types, type casting, and conversion between different bases. He seemed to have a real "ah-ha" moment when I showed him a trick for converting between hexadecimal, octal, and binary. I'm excited to see how he performs in the coming weeks in class, and anticipate marked improvement.
