We had a very positive lesson today. We continued working on our phonics workbook but started with reviewing the flashcards we've made and a few games of hangman. The student continues to try to rely on guessing instead of sounding out words. I am encouraging him not to guess and to just pick out the first letter of the word and make the sound when I know he's trying to guess. In this manner, he is always able to work through the word. It is a matter of getting him to do this on his own when he doesn't have someone working with him instead of resorting to guessing. We continued working through the workbook, and I assigned some homework; I picked five of the words we kept coming across in his book and assigned that he try to learn those five words over the next five days. From now on, I am also going to begin each lesson with him writing his full name out so that he can learn it through repetition.

We covered material in preparation for his English exam. We focused on the expository essay today and in future lessons we will focus on other aspects of the exam, such as the short answer segment and the reading and multiple choice segment. We studied a detailed model of the expository essay. We went over the prompt and did brainstorming. We studied strategies for how to write an introduction, body paragraph, and conclusion. He was given as homework an expository essay to write, vocabulary to study online, and a practice test with two short reading passages and multiple choice questions.

Today the student and I reviewed a presentation that he was preparing for tomorrow. He already had most of the slides completed with headers and photos, so we went over each slide and I suggested he make note cards to prepare for the presentation. He also edited some of the photos, inserted additional slides to act as transitions, and we went through the research paper to make sure the presentation covered all of the information he wanted to communicate.

I again gave the student a choice to read whatever he wanted from the simple books that he and I have. He chose to finish reading the book about bowling first, then another book about airplanes called "All Aboard Airplanes," which is in the same series as "All Aboard Trains," books we had read previously more than once. He again wrote these as tasks with check boxes to complete on the board. He is still very willing to talk and read with these more simple, picture-based books that he is interested in and gets to choose. I continued questioning strategies focused on making inferences and connecting his personal experience what we were reading to his own experience. After we finished each book, I asked him what kinds of things he had learned, and he wrote some things in a box on the whiteboard. He made the box look like the a bowling ball for the first one, an airplane for the second. I like the continued pattern of summary and creativity to show comprehension that he is demonstrating. At the end of the session, I laid out some more simple, leveled books that the student's father received last year from the boy's previous school as options to read. He seemed more interested in reading these books (not about bowling, trains, or airplanes) than I thought he'd be.

I met with the student and his mother on 3/19, we read two different stories, and I had him write a five paragraph essay on the first story. I corrected the format and the noun-verb conjugation. He is doing very well, although he should work on the articles. He also needs to add more informative details to the text. The student is applying what he has learned extremely well, and I would categorize his work on essays and individual interpretation of the stories read as grade 6 equivalent work. He then took the test for the first story and also performed very well.
