The student wants to bring up his comprehension in reading a little more. We started by reading 15 minutes of one of his favorite books. Next, we used an app to work on retention. We began with "The Haunted Library" and read the entire story. Then he took 'the practice test' and chose the correct answers from 4 available. The next story was "Predatory Insects" and taught all about bugs. We finished with 'the practice test' and again worked with the 4 available choices. The student did very well.

I practiced English with both students. The first student's inferential analysis skills are being challenged by the practice tests, and I'm continuing to help her discern the nuances of the text so that she can better comprehend the work. The second student is making progress as well. His "word attack" skills are being honed. His background knowledge is growing, and with time and self discipline, his comprehension will improve.

College Essays Tutoring review by Julia in Lakewood, CO
The student and I took turns reading pages in his K12 literature curriculum. The first story, Unit 1 Lesson 6, was "Kaddo's Wall," a West African folk tale retold. This fable revisited the theme that can be stated in a sentence: "Being greedy, selfish or foolish will lead to bad consequences." Lucas reviewed theme, character traits, motivations and changes, setting, foreshadowing and symbolism. The story tells of a greedy man named Kaddo who will not share his excess corn with his starving neighbors. He makes 100 poor girls grind all the corn to flour and builds a wall with it. Upon losing his cattle and crops, he is forced to eat the wall bit by bit! At this point in the unit it was instructive to compare and contrast characters and events in short answer workbook questions. The student is adept and confident when writing complete, thoughtful sentences with minimal prompting. Lesson 7 presented a tale of the Arabian Nights, "The Story of Baba Abdalla," about a beggar. The story asks: Is it better to have riches or to be kind with good judgement? The student understands that these tales all try to teach that the second alternative is better and leads to wealth of spirit. This story tells of a beggar who was so ashamed of his past greed that when he accepted alms from kind strangers he asked them to "box his ears." A wise caliph asks to hear the story behind this strange request. Upon seeing Baba Abdalla's remorse, he ensures that the old man will never need to beg again. The student answered online questions with 100% correct answers and wrote in his workbook. The unit was completed with a 7-question multiple choice assessment where he earned 100%. New vocabulary studied this session includes the words "prostrated," "alms," "hastened," and "score" (meaning 20). He is reading with improved expressiveness with prompting, demonstrates excellent comprehension verbally and in writing. He is excited about the next unit which focuses on animals.
