We discussed the student's progress in Animal Farm. He read two chapters and took a quiz since we last met. He reported that he understood those chapters well and that he was confident about his performance on the quiz. We then read the second half of chapter 9 together. I asked him several specific comprehension and more general "big picture" questions. There was only one thing he didn't understand, and it was about how they turn dead horses into glue. That small detail matters to understanding some larger concepts, so I am glad we were able to discuss it. Without understanding that, it isn't clear where the money came from for the pigs to buy their whiskey. Buying it with the money made from killing Boxer makes it even more hateful. We continued his story and wrapped up a first draft.

We went over the FOIL method, and also worked on nets for geometry problems. In the areas of foiling in particular, the is showing significant improvement, particularly with concepts that are above what he is currently learning.

The student and I had a great session. I appreciate his love for math and learning in general. We worked on missing math assignments and social studies work as well. We did timed test with the multiplication cards, and I gave him handwriting sheets for him to practice on until the next time.

The student has an outline for a research paper due on Monday, and he has to submit a thesis paragraph along with the outline. We worked on how to structure an opening paragraph, and the student continued to show great improvements to his writing. When he takes his time and re-reads the sentences he writes, he is able to catch his grammatical and language mistakes. We went over basic rules of grammar so he is better able to catch these basic typos, including comma, apostrophe, and semi-colon use. He still struggles with repetition and flow, but I continue to be impressed with the strides he is making. He has a great attitude, and is a pleasure to work with. For next week, I asked him to read a small portion of the book I had given him last week. If he has time, I would like him to write a summary of the first 2 chapters, including the author's main idea and tone. Writing is not his favorite activity, but the more he is able to practice, the better he will become.

We focused on reviewing and practicing the skills we have been working on. I continued to practice summarizing passages with the student. He read short passages, we discussed main ideas, then he outlined the main points of the passage. Then we discussed how to order the points in a concise and logical way. Then he practiced writing and editing a summary. He is starting to show some improvement in catching his own mistakes and not writing "backwards sentences." We also practiced tense agreement.

This focus of this session was on narrative writing. We discussed in detail what constitutes narrative writing, the difference between using concrete and abstract language and the main differences between informative and narrative writing styles. We read three different student examples and analyzed the narrative components of each and the student identified the figurative language components. We then discussed narrative nonfiction examples to tie into the previous session and read excerpts from professional authors like Maya Angelou and Mark Bowden. She is doing the homework assignment this week that I assigned on informative writing. Next week she will have the opportunity to do a homework assignment on narrative writing. We also recapped her novel project in her class.
