In yesterday's lesson I gave the student a handout covering "7 Steps of a Good Reader." To begin the session, she read each step to me aloud, and we discussed what it meant and gave examples of it. We identified which steps happened before reading, during reading, and after reading. Then we began to read the student's chapter book, focusing on the steps from the sheet: making connections to real life and prior knowledge, asking questions and making inferences, monitoring understanding, summarizing the text, and more. The student did a really good job applying these skills to her text. It's important that she continue to practice them so they become more innate and habitual as that will strengthen her reading all around. She even very astutely observed that some of the steps for during reading can also be done after and vice versa.

Today we began by reviewing the student's homework, as usual-- she is getting quicker and quicker at her reading assignments, and I'm noticing she's really retaining a lot of detail after the first read. Her written answers to comprehension and extension questions are getting more involved, and she's developing them in more detail without much prompting. Overall, her writing is getting more advanced-- she's using more complex syntax and is expanding upon her ideas more than ever before. Moving forward, I'd like to focus some attention on the mechanics of grammar-- particularly tenses, and making sure she has tense- agreement in her longer written passages.

Today, the student selected "Night of the Ninjas" for her reading and again we were whisked away on a wonderful adventure. Every now and then, I would stop to ask her a question about a paragraph she just read to determine if she understood what she was reading and each time, she answered correctly. She is a very bright girl and is able to decode most words all on her own. She did ask for help with writing her summary this time, so I brainstormed suggestions with her and had her select which sentences she wanted to use. After completing her paragraph, we moved on to some other homework pages, which consisted of math. One page correlated addition with multiplication, for example, 3+3+3+3+3 = 15 is the same as 3 x 5 = 15. Another page gave her word problems stating how much something cost and the quantity purchased. She had to calculate the total amount spent. In total, she aced nearly every question.

We looked at the relationships between three of the student's essays (two supplemental essays and her common app essay) to find what's working in her writing and emphasize that across all of her work. We also jumped into close reading her common app essay to refine it well in advance of her January 1 deadline. She will continue to work on her essay and we will reconvene in the evening to continue our work together.
