About This Class
Everyone has a story to tell, and in this camp young storytellers will become authors! Over four days, students will break down the elements of a story and workshop stories of their own, developing characters, a plot, elements of suspense, and a resolution (which may or may not be happily ever after). In the end, they’ll have a story that they can print, bind, and share. Here’s what they’ll do:
**Day One**: The Elements of a Story
Students will explore the elements of a story while discussing those elements–including characters, settings, and plots–from their favorite stories.
**Day Two**: Character, Setting, & Plot Workshop
Students will begin outlining their own story, identifying and developing their protagonist, antagonists, plot, and setting. Points of instruction will include techniques for character development, plot development, and choosing which details to include and omit.
**Day Three**: Setbacks and Resolution Workshop
Students will learn to add suspense and drama to their story, layering in setbacks and deciding on a resolution for their plot. Points of instruction will include the “rising action” of the second act of a story and the various ways a plot can be resolved.
**Day Four**: Becoming an Author
In this final session, students will put the finishing touches on their stories, including illustrations, titles, and more. The resolution at the end of this four-day plot is for each protagonist to produce a story uniquely their own, that they can share with family and friends under their own byline!
