During this session, we finished going through the student's final review packet. We spent quite a bit of time reviewing redox reactions. Her comfort level in assigning oxidation numbers and identifying reduction vs. oxidation reactions increased. We practiced balancing equations by using half-reactions. She seemed comfortable balancing the electrons in each half reaction. We also did quite a bit of review with pH and pOH calculations. When we finished the review, I helped the student answer some questions on the thermochemistry test.

We went over stoichiometry, wavelength and frequency of light, ideal gas law, writing balanced equations, chemical nomenclature, and combustion reactions. The student was very communicative when studying all of these subjects and picked up on them quite well. He did have to be reminded a few times about some simple material (subscripts vs coefficients in chemical equations), but has a good grasp on the concepts we covered.

The student just began the calorimetry unit and we worked on related problems for the first hour. The student breezed through them pretty well, with only a few confusing moments relating to problem set-up. This unit is great to work on because it incorporates the concepts of heat flow during reactions AND stoichiometry. We then went over a pre-lab with problems & questions for the last half hour. I am really impressed with the student's progress since I began meeting with him as these problems are gradually becoming more and more second nature to him. Which is extremely important since he has a final in a month. I plan to work with him more on problem set-ups in future sessions and help him review previous units to better prepare him for the final.
