Session Summaries by Chemistry Tutors

Chemistry Tutoring review by Brantley in Folsom, CA
We went over test material again, mostly homework questions, and did acid base equilibria and a variety of related topic questions. The student understands the material very well. I advised her to rest before her test to clear her head so that the little things don't trip her up.

Chemistry Tutoring review by Paris in Folsom, CA
We covered topics and problems that included determining the energy of photons based on their wavelength and frequency, drawing the correct Lewis structures for ionic molecules, determining lattice energies, drawing molecular orbitals and determining bond orders, and converting between frequency and wavelength for an EM wave. Overall, the student did great with the quantum mechanical material but she had a harder time with drawing MO diagrams and tackling more complex Lewis structures. I advised her that practicing more Lewis structures would be beneficial for her exam, but determining polyatomic MO diagrams would be excessive as I highly doubted this would be asked on her real exam.

Chemistry Tutoring review by Eunki in Folsom, CA
The student has a quiz on Monday so we focused on learning how to derive the formulas of the compounds based on the scientific names provided. Three distinct groups of compounds required three different ways of writing the compound formulas, but he did not have much difficulty in putting the material together. I oversaw him completing his homework for practice and answered any lingering questions regarding this topic, but otherwise, the session was rather straightforward without any overt concerns on his performance on the coming quiz.

Chemistry Tutoring review by Nathan in Folsom, CA
The student had only had 1 class since her previous exam, so we went a bit ahead in the material and reviewed quantum mechanics and quantum numbers, along with electron configurations. We did about an hour of textbook work and the rest was practice problems.

Chemistry Tutoring review by Shawn in Folsom, CA
The student has a Chemistry test tomorrow so we spent our session preparing for the exam. He had a homework assignment involving a review of periodic trends and other periodic table info. Since this is what his test is on and he needed to review periodic trends anyway we focused on the assignment. He worked through a number of problems. I encouraged him to skip the ones he knew how to do and save them for later and to do the tricky ones together during our tutoring time. As we went along I highlighted related concepts and had him explain his reasoning for each question. We reviewed periodic trends along the way. The student should study electron configuration and atomic radii/ionic radii trends tonight to help him succeed on his exam tomorrow.

Chemistry Tutoring review by Marc in Folsom, CA
We covered a wide variety of topics that were last minute questions before the exam (which was the same day). It was fast paced to make sure all questions were answered, but I tried not to be too fast because I wanted the student to save most of her energy for the exam later that day. We will most likely review these concepts again in a future session, but I'm hopeful that she did better on this past exam. She put in a good amount of work, tried to implement some changes and really strived to understand each question and the thought process behind the answer rather than just memorize it.
