Calculus Tutoring review by Nicholas in San Bernardino, CA
The student and I continued our discussion of the concepts behind his upcoming Calculus test on Monday. We both reviewed the theory that we had covered yesterday, and added a small amount more on business optimization problems today. I am confident the student has a firm grasp on his test material, and will do well tomorrow.

In this lesson, we began derivatives. We worked through a bunch of problems together using the definition of the derivative: lin h goes to 0 of [f(a+h)-f(a)]/h. These problems are challenging and require many different steps. At first, the student struggled to identify the a value and figure out how to use the given function to substitute in f(a+h) and f(a). Once we got there though, these problems end up being quite difficult limits to evaluate relative to the limits problems previously seen in his course. They require expanding out (a+b)^2 or (a+b)^3 or common denominators and involve canceling lots of terms and factoring. Near the end, I showed him the shortcut method which is to come in a few weeks, and he liked that much better and did quite well with it.

We spent the majority of time going over the student's last test. We went over some of the more abstract problems that involve thinking about the first and second derivatives and the shapes of their graphs. At the end we went over an absolute min/max problem from the student's homework and a couple of the more complicated problems from her test review.

She is bright and quick and exhibits strong talent. She understands concepts well. The next session is on Sunday at 5:45 p.m., and may include the student's sibling.

Calculus Tutoring review by Aaron in San Bernardino, CA
We went over integration problems involving trig substitution, Simpson's rule, trapezoidal rule, and p-tests for divergence of an integral. We also evaluated a converging integral with an exponential factor. The student picks up the material easily when he sees examples.
