Calculus Tutoring review by Joseph in Anaheim, CA
The student was given some AP practice problems relating to integrating volume by the disk and washer methods; fortunately, while these were slightly time-consuming, they were not too difficult for him. We then looked at new material on finding volume by the shell and slice methods; these concepts gave him a little more trouble, but he clicked soon.

We practiced optimization problems, where he was uncertain how to set up the problems but always did well once he tried. Then we talked about the Mean Value Theorem and the Racetrack Theorem. Then we did some review for his upcoming test, on what the first and second derivates mean, how to find critical points, and how to graph from critical points.

This was our first session. The student and I worked on problems from the review given by his professor to prepare for the final exam. We covered limits, discontinuities, and derivatives. There was a variety of problem types that needed to be understood. We spent extra focus on the conceptual graphing of a derivative function. He will send me review materials by email.

The student and I reviewed topics that her class covered last week, which included finding the turning points of a function using the first derivative, and determining if they are local and absolute extrema on an interval. I next taught her how to use implicit differentiation to solve related rate problems. We worked through several different problems where we used implicit differentiation to solve for the rate of change of a specific variable.

The student and I worked on trig/ log derivatives, implicit differentiation, and related rates. He said right at the start that his biggest struggle was with the reciprocal trig functions, we discussed how to derive those formulas from things he did know and I encouraged him to memorize those steps.
