Dear VT

Resources for an artsy little boy living in a rural area?

November 27, 2024
Question

My son (8) is artsy. Since we live in a rural area with very few resources it’s hard for him to get what he needs as an artistic outlet. How can we help him be who he is out in the sticks?

Answer

It's great that you want to encourage your son's artistic interests! And though it may take a little more effort, it’s definitely possible to get him the kind of enrichment he needs to be his vibrant, artistic self in a rural area. Here are a few fun and creative ways to support him:

1. Explore online art lessons.

How about finding some cool art classes online? Varsity Tutors offers several (which we’ll link at the bottom, don’t worry!) but YouTube is also a treasure trove when it comes to art tutorials. There are also platforms like Skillshare where professional artists teach a variety of techniques.

2. Stock up on art supplies.

Why not surprise him with a variety of art supplies? Let him experiment with paints, crayons, clay, and maybe even some digital tools if he’s interested in that. It’s all about letting him explore and find what he loves most.

3. Check out local events.

Art has a way of persevering even in the most unlikely of places. That’s part of what makes it great! Sometimes local libraries or community centers have art classes or workshops. It’s worth a look! And you never know, there might be a hidden art club nearby.

4. Join or start a community art project!

What if you two started a small art project in your community? Maybe a mural, or setting up an art show at a local event? It could be a fun project to plan together!

5. Plan an art trip!

If you’re up for a little trip, visiting a museum or an art exhibit in a nearby city could be a wonderful experience for him. Seeing professional artwork up close is really inspiring and family trips are often great bonding experiences.
