My son (13) wants to be an entrepreneur. He’s very focused on learning to create his own business (though I don’t think he knows what he wants to invent or sell yet.) How can I help encourage my budding entrepreneur?

Hi, Alyssa!
It’s great to hear about your son’s interest. We’ve definitely noticed a business-oriented mindset appearing earlier and earlier with a lot of our students. Being committed to helping him along in his journey to entrepreneurship is a great idea. First off, it would be great to help encourage his creativity by helping him brainstorm ideas and think creatively about solutions for the problems he sees around him. Start small, of course; you don’t need to solve world hunger over breakfast (though if you can, go for it!) In these discussions, though, make sure to take a backseat and let him generate the ideas. Yes, even if you know they’re not good ones. Trial and error is crucial in creating resilience and a growth mindset and you don’t want to rob him of that experience. If he shows interest in a particular industry or type of business, help him explore it further. This could involve visiting related businesses, meeting with professionals in that field, or researching successful companies in that industry. If possible, connect him with successful entrepreneurs who can provide guidance and advice based on their own experiences. You’d be surprised how willing professionals are to talk to young, creative entrepreneurs. Finally, celebrate his successes. Acknowledge and celebrate his achievements, no matter how small they may seem to you. This will help build his confidence and motivation and increase the bond between you. With this advice, you can help nurture his entrepreneurial spirit and set him on a path to success in the business world!
