Session Summaries by Biology Tutors

Biology Tutoring review by Kaetan in Woodbury, MN
We covered AP Biology concepts dealing with cell communications, mitosis, and meiosis. We cleared up the student's questions on genetic mutations, the different stages of mitosis and what occurs during those stages, and the possible sources of genetic variation. She really knows the material and just needed help working through her questions due to the massive amount of material one needs to know in AP Biology. She also needed some help on questions that asked for the steps that required knowing processes. After finishing each section, she and I delved into some practice questions designed to test her knowledge. Even though she got most of them right, I thought it was very useful to work through the questions and answers to delve into how she was thinking about the questions. I believe this helped her gain a well-rounded insight into the materials.

We looked over the student's study guide for Unit 6 and went through all of the questions she was unsure about. We also looked at the online quiz that she had due and worked through a couple of questions that she had missed in her first two attempts of taking it. We spent the last portion of our time going through key vocabulary, and I quizzed her on her knowledge of their definitions. Lastly, we made plans to meet next week, and I gave her some study tips/advice on how she should prepare for her next quiz.

Biology Tutoring review by Joyce in Woodbury, MN
Today, we reviewed features of chromosomes, meiosis, chromosomal mutations, and genetic conditions related to chromosome duplications. We started with the student drawing the meiosis diagrams, which he has been practicing daily. Next, as the student was struggling with terminology spelling, we extensively reviewed the terms synapsis, abnormalities, chorionic villi sampling, amniocentesis, and Patau's syndrome. Other new terms the student practiced drawing included chromosomal mutations of insertion, deletion, translocation, and inversion. Last, we reviewed the newest material including Mendelian genetics of inheritance.

We covered replication, transcription, and translation in this session. The student did very well transcribing mRNA from DNA and recognized the components of the transcription and translation process. I would recommend she study the process as a whole before her test on Friday.

Biology Tutoring review by Nicole in Woodbury, MN
We covered genetically modified organisms and how they are manufactured and we also reviewed the steps of photosynthesis and the cellular respiration. The student was having a hard time following the mechanisms of photosynthesis and cellular respiration so we went through each cycle step by step, paying close attention to the location, what, and why each step occurs in the different cycles. He had a positive attitude toward the material and made sure to clear up whatever he didn't understand. I did include some study skills as far as writing things down in a short hand way that he could understand and also in his own words. I will review with him next session to make sure he has the material down.

Biology Tutoring review by Mia in Woodbury, MN
We reviewed monohybrid crossing. Then, we covered dihybrid crossing and rule of addition and multiplication, and we created dominant and recessive pedigrees. Using practice questions and the "teach back" method, the student was able to confirm her knowledge of each topic and transition to polygenic inheritance and pleiotropy. We discussed more practice questions and scheduled next session to be devoted to old test questions so she can prepare for her exam.
